The UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia (ROSA) works in eight countries to save children’s lives, defend their rights, and help them fulfill their potential; this includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. UNICEF ROSA is dedicated to advancing the rights of all children in South Asia, especially the most disadvantaged.

UNICEF South Asia is now working to implement the new UNICEF Strategic Plan for 2022 - 2025 for more targeted efforts. Key priorities for the region include but are not limited to bridging the digital divide, addressing severe stunting and wasting, addressing mental health, especially amongst adolescents, and engaging the private sector to diversify UNICEF’s income base in South Asia. ROSA operates under the leadership and management of the Regional Director for South Asia.

Purpose:

The purpose of this internship is to support the management of the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia.

This internship provides the selected candidate with exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and a better understanding of management at the executive level.

Expected Scope of Work:

The intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Organizing information, such as creating folders or structures for online sharing platforms
  • Ensuring that content is appropriately organized, tagged, and categorized according to the established metadata and UNICEF taxonomy standards
  • Monitoring and maintaining the accuracy and completeness of metadata to ensure effective search results and filtering options
  • Archiving outdated documents to maintain a streamlined knowledge repository
  • Research as requested for an array of utilities from brainstorming new programmes to supporting communication assets for fundraising and partnership efforts
  • Supporting event organizing by contributing to executive brainstorming, as well as, composing concept notes, save-the-dates, agendas, invitations, and presentations
  • Consolidating essential information into, for example, report summaries or briefing notes
  • Attending exclusive meetings, taking note of the most important information, as well as, action items, and drafting post-meeting follow-up notes to be distributed to all parties
  • Other tasks as needed, including supporting internal processes, research, Regional Office, or Country Office projects.

Supervisor:

The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Manager who reports to the Regional Director.

Estimated Duration of Contract:

4-6 months (to commence as soon as possible)

Kathmandu (remote working possible)

Amount Budgeted for this Activity:

Should travel to the duty station become necessary and not covered by the University, the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia will support the Intern’s round trip travel costs of up to $1000.

UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend in accordance with UNICEF rules and recommendations – if this is not covered by the University. All other costs will be borne by the University or the candidate.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • At least 18 years old and enrolled in a graduate or Ph.D. degree program, or have graduated from one within the past two years
  • Background in management, administration, communication, journalism, or a similar discipline
  • Excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to distill lengthy and often complex content into summaries
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and be flexible in daily workings
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment
  • Knowledge of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with Sharepoint and its document management capabilities
  • Basic understanding of metadata and taxonomy concepts and their application in knowledge management
  • No immediate relatives (e.g., Father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office, and have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to

UNICEF’s General Terms and Conditions:

The successful intern will be governed by the following conditions:

  • Status: Although not considered a staff member of UNICEF, the intern shall be subject to the authority of the Executive Director and the authority delegated by her to the Division Director and Heads of Offices. Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNICEF's officials and staff members.
  • Financial support: UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend in accordance with UNICEF rules and recommendations. Interns must make their arrangements for living expenses. Living accommodations and other expenses are also their responsibilities. Travel costs to and from the duty station will be negotiated according to UNICEF's rules and regulations.
  • Medical health and coverage: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship; therefore, the intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance.
  • Confidentiality and publication of information: As an intern, you will respect the confidentiality of information that you collect or are exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  • Employment prospects: The UNICEF internship programme is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such. Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to UNICEF staff during the period of internship.

UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
