Under the overall guidance of the Chief of Social Policy/Focal Points in UNICEF Colombo Office and UNICEF Batticaloa Field Office, the intern will support the work of the section related to CFCI in Batticaloa Municipality.

The specific tasks may include:

  • Support the Commissioner of Local Government (CLG) office in scaling up the CFCI in the province, by mainly assisting the legal framework development work and undertaking follow-ups with the selected local authorities;
  • Prepare project briefs, presentations, and human-interest stories to increase visibility of the initiative;
  • Provide inputs to development of campaign materials;
  • Write and edit project-relevant reports;
  • Coordinate between UNICEF Colombo and UNICEF Batticaloa Field Office;
  • Any other reasonable task assigned by the supervisor

Learning opportunities for the intern:

  • General understanding of the mission of UNICEF, the main programmes implemented in Sri Lanka on Social Policy, particularly on Child-Friendly-City Initiative and the role of stakeholders and partners at sub-national level;
  • Insight and hands-on experience in UNICEF’s role in promoting children’s rights;
  • Insight and hands-on experience in organizing and running complex projects;
  • Becoming familiar with working in a United Nation’s agency and in a multicultural environment.

    Expected outputs:

  • Maintenance of notes capturing the day-to-day tasks undertaken, meetings attended etc.

  • Products related to assigned tasks.
  • End of Assignment Report

Duration: 12 weeks

Note: The selected intern is required to be based in Trincomalee with the CLG office and travel within the Eastern province, or if based in Colombo, he/she will be required to travel to Batticaloa (1-week in Batticaloa every month) to support the field works.

RENUMERATION: A monthly Internship stipend

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Education: BA degree in Social Sciences, or International Development or any other relevant field.
  • Interest: Interest in development-related fields, humanitarian work, and children’s rights;
  • Language skills: Written and spoken proficiency in English and one of the National Languages (Sinhala / Tamil)
  • Good oral and written communications skills and demonstrated coordination skills and interest
  • Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.

To be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years. - Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF's working languages: English, French or Spanish. Fluency in the working language of the office you are applying to is required.
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority that the intern will report to.
  • Individuals must demonstrate excellent academic performance through recent university or institution records.
  • Additional consideration will be given for any past experience.
