UNICEF Public Partnerships Division (PPD) works to strengthen the organization’s position as a partner for children's rights among governments and public actors around the world. UNICEF Brussels Office is in charge of the relations with the EU institutions and works to prioritize children and UNICEF’s priorities across EU’s policies, legislation and programmes.

How can you make a difference?

Working in the UNICEF Brussels Office, the intern under the overall guidance of the Senior Advisor, Humanitarian Affairs with matrix reporting to the Deputy Director would have the opportunity to learn about UNICEF’s work both in the development and humanitarian context.

The learning opportunities for this internship will help expand intern’s skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  1. EU grants management process:
  • Assist the contribution management teams in the processing of grants for EU funding (Humanitarian and Development) including proposal and reporting review, alignment with application criteria, consistency with objectives and the legal and operational requirements of the different entities in the EU Commission.
  • Provide support to the Humanitarian and Development teams, with the quality insurance for interim and final progress reports and grant closure. Provide input to reviewing documents and advise on corrective actions to be taken. Assist the team to submit and record reports on relevant online platforms
  • Assist contribution management team in the processing of legal agreements where necessary.
  1. Resource tracking and analysis tools and mechanisms:
  • Support the team to regularly update the funding pipeline and funding received, including periodical analysis of EU and UNICEF funding data and trends.
  • Assist in updating the humanitarian fund tracker for HIP (Humanitarian Implementation Plan) and keep track of and summarize ECHO funding decisions for the team.
  1. Programme Support:
  • Be an integral part of the team for the preparation of the annual UNICEF- EU Strategic Dialogue – briefing package, briefing notes, presentations etc.
  • Support on internal coordination on thematic areas such as Education, Climate etc or Geographical priority areas eg, Ukraine, Syria, Yemen
  • Support the capacity building team in the delivery of online trainings and webinars and update of training materials as needed. This to include restructuring of the EU Guidance page on UNICEF’s sharepoint site.
  • Support the office in outreach and networking with EU institutions
  • Support with the preparation of documentation for meetings and incoming missions, including participating in key discussions with the relevant parts of the EU institutions, taking notes and drafting minutes of the meetings.
  1. Tailored learning:
  • As appropriate, according to the intern’s interest, S/he may also expand to thematic areas of interest along the UNICEF programme lines.

Learning and development:

A learning and development plan will be agreed with the intern, aiming at:

  • Enhancing and updating knowledge of EU institutions and policies;
  • Improving knowledge on child rights;
  • Improving understanding of UNICEF’s activities, policies and organization;
  • Improving basic organization and communication skills.

The Intern will receive supervision, guidance and coaching by the immediate supervisor from the start of the assignment.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Enrollment in a university (Bachelor's or higher) majoring in human rights, political science, international development, humanitarian aid or related field.
  • Genuine interest in and basic knowledge of children’s rights; understanding of UNICEF’s mandate is a must.
  • Familiarity with the functioning of the EU Institutions; previous experience related to the European Institutions is a strong asset.
  • Proven ability to synthesize information and communicate it simply and effectively; strong writing, research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate in a diplomatic environment, using tact and judgement. Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment.
  • Excellent command of oral and written English. Knowledge of French and/or another EU language an asset.
  • Knowledge of office computer systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet research.

Start date & duration:

5 September 2022 for 6 months.

Allowance:

UNICEF will pay a stipend of 1177 euros per month to contribute towards transportation and meal costs. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Visa:

The incumbent must be eligible to live in Belgium for the duration of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining visa or residency permits.

Insurance:

Interns are covered for any service-incurred injury, illness or death under the UNICEF procedure on Malicious Acts Insurance Policy (DHR/PROCEDURE/2019/002) or as amended. The selected candidate must provide proof of medical insurance prior to start his/her work with the Brussels Office. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining health insurance for the incumbent.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

Subject to the sanitary conditions at the time of the start of the internship, the intern will work in the UNICEF Office in Brussels, attending many meetings at and around the EU institutions. S/he will work with an assigned UNICEF staff and report to his/her immediate supervisor. S/he is not expected to travel during the assignment. S/he will be provided with a UNICEF computer. Since the situation regarding COVID might change at any time, flexibility in adapting to the working environment is essential.
