ABOUT WFP

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill a national intern position within Programme Unit under Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience, to be based in Beira, Mozambique.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of graduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months in Social sciences, Finance, Economics, Development, or equivalent areas of studies.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
• Excellent command of Portuguese is required.
• Working knowledge of English would be an asset.

JOB PURPOSE

The World Food Programme (WFP) in Mozambique made the transition to the Country Strategic Plan (CSP) in 2017. Through the CSP, WFP Mozambique established a long-term commitment to build resilience against climate shocks for greater food security and nutrition. This is in line with Government commitments and priorities on Zero Hunger and the 2030 Agenda. To this end, following extensive assessments and project design, WFP started implementation of its multi-year, climate resilience initiative in the provinces of Tete, Gaza, Nampula, Zambezia, and Sofala. The initiative brings together the different programming approaches implemented by the CO, including Food Assistance for Assets, the R4 Rural Resilience Initiative (Conservation agriculture, Village savings and loans, Micro-insurance, Watershed management, Climate services), and Shock Sensitive Social Protection, and Forecast-based Financing. In addition, it aims to establish linkages to the other Activities under the CSP, such as emergency, nutrition, Smallholder Agricultural Market Support, Capacity Strengthening, and School Feeding, as most fitting.

The Intern will support the financial risk management component of this portfolio, focusing on the insurance component, with involvement at the macro, meso, and micro levels. This work is to be conducted with WFP internal units, at CO and SO levels, as well as external partners, including government counterparts, UN agencies, NGO partners, and the relevant private sector organizations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Programme in Beira, the candidate will perform the following duties:

• Provide support on financial inclusion for small holder farmers under the integrated climate risk management approach.
• Support technically and operationally the saving and credit components, including working closely to identify suitable partner financial institutions.
• Support at the field office level the coordination and management of partnerships with implementing partners, subnational stakeholders, and private sector.
• Provide technical support to service providers on financial literacy (including, but not only on index-insurance to farmers)
• Build a network and enhance the capacity of key financial inclusion stakeholders, bringing together stakeholders at local level from public and private sector.
• Ensure the documentation of saving and credit components and contribute to the preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for relevant stakeholders.
• Develop, manage and maintain a database of all key information related to farmers engaged.
• Support regularly reporting progress of activities to the Country office.
• Support the development of reporting and communications materials focusing on integrated climate risk management and financial services components.
• Perform other duties as required.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP of US$ 575 per month.
• The internship programme is for a duration of 6 months, with possibility to extend for additional 2 months.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
