The President of Kenya declared the ongoing severe drought a national disaster on September 9, 2021. Between September 2021 to August 2022, the number of people in need more than doubled, from 2.1 to 4.35 million and around 884,464 children aged 6 to 59 months requiring treatment for acute malnutrition, of which 222,720 are severely malnourished.

Persistent drought, socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 compounded by disease outbreaks have severely affected access to basic social services for children and over 550,817 refugees in Kenya.

UNICEF continues to work with the government, partners and UN agencies to deliver life-saving and interventions to drought-affected populations, providing essential services to refugees, and cushioning vulnerable families in the urban informal settlements against the impact of COVID-19 through strengthening multi-sectoral linkages and maximizing integrated coverage meeting gaps in the response efforts of the government and partners.

The drought situation continues to worsen in twenty (20) out of the 23 ASAL counties in Kenya with a general poor onset of the October- December 2022 season. Eleven ((11) counties are in ALARM phase while 9 are in ALERT phase and only 3 are at NORMAL phase and drought affecting over 4.35 million people.
