The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in the Food Systems and Smallholder Support Unit, based in HQ, Rome, Italy.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:

The Food Systems and Smallholder Support Unit produces normative guidance and provides technical support to WFP Country Offices and Regional Bureaux embracing food systems approaches and implementing Smallholder Agricultural Market Support programmes, including Post-Harvest Loss (PHL) reduction initiatives. The Unit also co-leads with Supply Chain the implementation of the corporate Local and Regional Food Procurement Policy. The Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance emerged from the UN Food Systems Summit. WFP was strongly engaged in the Summit processes and in the preparation of the two Summits in Rome and New York, as the anchor agency for Action Track 5: Build Resilience to Vulnerabilities, Shocks and Stress. The Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance (the Alliance), HDP Nexus, Climate Resilient Development Pathways are three WFP resilience coalitions and is a partner in another six coalitions. WFP has mobilized UNCDF, IFAD and FAO, along with the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD as the strategic coordinators of the Alliance with the Secretariat and lead focal point placed within the Resilience and Food Systems Service in the Programme Humanitarian Development Division. WFP is positioning itself to use its considerable strengths in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, resilience, and related supply chains arena to bring a strategic focus on requirements for integrated and resilient food systems and local food supply chains and to provide technical assistance to countries that want to take this approach. In addition to requirements to strengthen supply chains and address market inefficiencies, requirements include ensuring climate resilience strategies and the human development peace nexus are addressed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Work Stream leader and direct supervision of Post Food Systems Summit work stream lead in PROR-F, in the Resilience and Food Systems Service (PROR), the incumbent will support the efforts to support WFP’s strategic and programmatic engagement through the establishing and functioning of the Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance (the Alliance). The incumbent will support mobilization of partners, conduct analysis, and review of national pathway documents and liaise with external and internal actors and partners of the Alliance. The work will focus on mobilizing partners for meetings, providing support to external partners in facilitating exchanges and conducting analyses and research as required. The incumbent will support WFP’s collaboration and coordination with the Rome-Based Agencies and AUDA-NEPAD as the co-lead institutions of the Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance. Specifically, the incumbent will:

• Assist the work stream in working with the RBA partners to combine strengths in producing a matrix of analytical tools and programmes relevant to the priority’s areas of the Alliance in preparation for missions.
• Support in providing early drafts of concept notes for the team when participating in advocacy events, developing of PowerPoint presentations, 2pagers, etc.
• Collect information from partners in preparation for missions to targeted countries.
• Contribute to internal discussions of the Resilience and Food Systems service.
• Provide research material to support with engagement with external actors – countries, donors, and institutions – as required.
• Support the team on internal and external events related to food systems for visibility and partnerships, for example, internal side events at the Executive Board and external side events at global, regional and national events.
• Assist with the servicing of the Steering Group of the Alliance and any Task Force formed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university.
• University course attendance in the past 12 months.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS****:

• Demonstrated interest and knowledge in the UNFSS, especially building resilient local food supply chains.
• Excellent writing, analytical and research skills.
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and the use of social media and other online tools in English and French.
• Ability to take initiatives and work independently and in teams.
• Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).

WORKING LANGUAGES

• Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in French.

Be familiar with the operations of WFP, and the work of the Resilience and Food Systems Service in PROR

Have full knowledge of the work of the Post Food Systems Summit work stream, especially the Resilient Local Food Supply Chains and how that is linked to the work of WFP.

Be familiar with and can facilitate collaboration with the Rome Based Agencies, African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, member states and other stakeholders of the Resilient Local Food Supply Chains Alliance

Have knowledge of the priorities required for building resilience in local food supply chains

Write concepts notes, 2-pagers and prepare PowerPoints for advocacy and learning events

Arrange meetings and dialogues with partners

Build research data base on donors, countries and institutions that support building resilient local food supply chains.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.

• WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
