How can you make a difference?

In May 2023, the Inter-Agency Technical Cooperation on Youth and Green Skills was established by UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific, UN Women Asia Pacific and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Asia Pacific to advance normative frameworks on gender equality, decent work and green economies, and just transition to low carbon development by leveraging organizational mandates and existing programs.

UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) is now seeking an intern to map opportunities for green skills development for youth in the Asia-Pacific region, including emerging green sectors, training providers, target groups, skills gap, and funding opportunities. This is a six-month full-time assignment.

Work Assignment:

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Adolescent Development Specialist within UNICEF EAPRO, the Green Skills for Young People Intern will be the UNICEF focal point for the Inter-Agency Partnership with UNEP and UN Women, and will be responsible for:

1. Mapping: Map opportunities for green skills development for young people in the Asia-Pacific region, including emerging green sectors, training providers, target groups, skills gap, gender gaps, and funding opportunities;

2. Liaison: Serve as the UNICEF focal point and liaison, ensuring all activities related to the mapping have clear objectives and timelines and are documented.

3. Green Skills for Girls: contribution to the work around gender-responsive and inclusive green skills development for young people, with a focus on the most marginalized and vulnerable, by identifying strengths and gender gaps from the mapping;

4. Partnership building: Identify dynamic like-minded youth groups, organisations and networks that could join the inter-agency partnership’s cause and support the delivery of its programmes;

5. Direct engagement with young people: Tap into and engage with wider networks of other young people, especially, adolescent girls, to identify emerging issues in young people’s lives, through different engagement methods (focus group discussions, interviews, social media, polls, etc.).

Duration of Contract: 6 months

Qualifications of Successful Candidate******:

• Be enrolled in a degree program in an undergraduate or graduate school, or be a recent graduate;

• Some basic experience at the national and/or international level in youth empowerment, girls’ networks, gender equality, youth-led campaigns and youth skills development or similar topics.

• Knowledge and networks among youth groups, girl-led organization and/or green skills initiatives in the region is an asset;

• Experience working with young people at the grassroots level or experience leading a youth-led organization is an asset.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

• Strong oral and written skills in English; Good drafting, formulation, reporting skills.

• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;

• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines

Conditions of Intern:

  1. Expenses: Stipend according to UNICEF’s guideline is applicable.
  2. Health/Medical insurance: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship whether on or off UNICEF premises. The intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance. The intern will be required to provide with a proof of medical insurance prior to commence work.
  3. Confidentiality. The intern is required to respect the confidentiality of information that s/he collect or is exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without the explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  4. Impartiality. The intern is required to respect the impartiality and independence required of UNICEF and will not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to UNICEF.
  5. Employment Prospects. There is no expectance of employment at the end of the internship.
