Purpose of the internship assignment:

Internship Opportunities with UNICEF South Soudan will help to provide a mutually beneficial relationship between UNICEF and university students, young graduates, post-graduate students, or persons similarly situated (collectively referred to as Interns). A particular attention will be paid to potential female candidates.

Under the overall guidance of the Construction Engineer, and WASH officers for UNICEF South Sudan, the Intern provides technical Support in construction and/or rehabilitation works in schools, Health Facilities, and in any other project they may be asked to support on.

Key Duties and Tasks:

Under the supervision of the Construction Engineer, and in interaction with the WASH technical Team, both at country office and field offices, the intern will:

Assist in supervising all construction and/or rehabilitation works in schools and health facilities.

  • Ensuring that Contractor(s) comply with the Technical Drawings, BoQ, detailed ToR, South Sudan General Construction specifications, and any other applicable technical specifications or guidelines.
  • Assist in the review or evaluation of the project documents making technical inputs where necessary.
  • Assist in monitoring contractor’s compliance to Environmental and Social safeguards including compliance to Health and Safety of the labor force on site and protection of the third party. Ensuring the Contractor duly fills the ESIA Screening checklist per site.
  • Support in the measurement of works completed and verifies payment certificates.
  • Assist in preparing works monitoring plan; conduct regular site visits and bringing to UNICEF Education, WASH and Health Management team any key issues.
  • Support in ensuring quality control for all works including but not limited to checking compliance to materials quality, concrete mix ratios, materials, and works tests; final finishes, etc.
  • Support in organizing bi-weekly project meetings and accurately record meeting minutes.
  • Assist in preparing bi-weekly project progress reports and monthly cumulative progress reports.
  • Upon completion of works, ensure that contractor duly reinstates the site.
  • Bring to the attention of the UNICEF Construction Engineer and WASH Manager any works that may not be timely achieved.
  • Alert UNICEF Construction Engineer and WASH Manager of any variation of works and seek necessary approval for the variation to be affected.
  • Liaise with the relevant stakeholders during the project implementation process.
  • Ensure that the project meets the intended objectives and goals.
  • To improve future programming, the intern shall prepare end of project report highlighting clearly challenges encountered, lessons learnt, best practices used.
  • Perform any other tasks and duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Note: The intern will be expected to regularly travel to the field to monitor construction activities in schools and health facilities. All official travel will be covered by UNICEF.

To qualify, you are:

Education:

Be enrolled in a master’s degree programme or have completed 5 years of full-time studies at a university in civil engineering, architecture, construction management, or any other related field.

Have graduated within the past two years.

Experience:

No experience required

Language: Good working knowledge of the English language is required. Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage.

Skills:

Suitable candidates will ideally have the following:

  • Knowledge in interpreting building plans, or knowledge of AutoCAD, ARCHICAD.
  • Conversant with Engineering Standards of the Country or applicable Engineering standards.
  • Good communication skills including report writing skills.
  • Conversant with Microsoft office and outlook.
  • Knowledge of engineering behavioral competencies, good team player, positive attitude, flexible mind, and comfortable working in multi-cultural settings.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, applying engineering judgment whenever necessary.
  • Exhibit a flexible, can-do attitude to problem-solving using your initiative.
  • Be reliable and motivated.

Conditions of Intern:

Expenses: Please note that internships at UNICEF are unpaid. However, a small stipend may be available inclusive of transport costs.

Health/Medical insurance: The intern is required to hold valid health/accident insurance. UNICEF accepts no responsibilities for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship whether on or off UNICEF premises.

Employment: There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
