Department
The ILO has been responding to conflicts and disasters since its foundation in 1919 to promote stability and social justice through decent work for all, a commitment which was reaffirmed with the adoption of the ILO’s Recommendation No. 205 on employment and decent work for peace and resilience in 2017. The new DG elected has established a new action programme on crisis and post-crisis (AP/CRISIS) in 2023 aiming to reinforce – among others – ILO’s role across the Humanitarian, Development and Peace Nexus (HDPN).
AP/CRISIS promotes the ILO’s decent work agenda in countries and areas affected by conflict and disasters with a view to consolidating peace, building resilience, enhancing social justice and promoting employment recovery in fragile situations and in the aftermath of crisis.
To this end the Action Programme responsibilities include, among others,
- Disseminating and supporting the implementation of the ILO Recommendation 205 on Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience
- Coordinating crisis responses in conflict and disaster settings
- Building capacities of ILO and constituents on the role of decent work in the Humanitarian, Development and Peace Nexus (HDPN)
- Develop knowledge and gathering and sharing lessons learned on what works in supporting peace and resilience through employment and decent work
Learning areas
Under the supervision of Nexus Chief Technical Adviser dealing with the Humanitarian, Development and Peace Nexus, the intern will support AP/CRISIS work in reinforcing ILO’s capacities to work across the HDPN, including through the implementation of the ILO Recommendation No. 205 “Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience”.
More specifically, the intern will engage in the following three areas:
- Awareness raising, communication and international events
- Assist in preparing workshop and other events on Decent Work in the HDPN and crisis situations.
- Assist in the organisation of key regional and international events such as the donors meeting for Palestine (June 2024), the Regional Nexus Academy and Geneva Peace Week (logistics, briefings, background documents and communication material);
- Assist in awareness raising and advocacy initiatives and campaigns at global, regional and country level on the implications of Recommendation No. 205, including by preparing promotional materials.
- Assist in developing communication material on ILO work in crisis situation, including a Nexus platorm and social media
- Policy advice, development cooperation and capacity development
- Contribute to documenting and disseminating lessons learned and good practice related to ILO’s initiatives in fragile, conflict and disaster situations, maintain electronic archives of relevant information, and produce presentations, documents and updates as necessary.
- Assist in developing and finalising training materials and guidelines for capacity development of tripartite constituents on the HDPN
Education
Currently enrolled in the last year of a graduate degree (Master or higher) or having completed such a programme in the year preceding the application in one or more of the following, or similar, disciplines: disaster/climate and environmental studies, international relations, development studies, gender/human rights studies, social and political science.
Experience
First field experiences in developing countries, including in fragile and post-conflict countries, are an asset.
Languages
Excellent command of English (oral and written); good command of French and/or Spanish is an asset
Computer Skills
good kowldge of communication toos. Social media, also infographics (canva...)
Competencies
Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and able to work in a team

Selection process:
Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.
If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.
Stipend:
As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.
Insurance:
Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
