UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world.

For every child, hope. Child migration is at an unprecedented scale. In 2019, over 33 million children globally lived outside their country of birth – among them 13 million refugees and asylum seekers. Millions more have been affected by international migration – be it as second-generation migrant children or children left behind by migrating parents. Recognizing that migrant and refugee children are often those who are most vulnerable to trafficking, abuse and exploitation, UNICEF has appealed to the international community to bring this issue to the forefront of global dialogue.

To better respond to the challenges facing migrant and refugee children, UNICEF has made Migrant and Refugee Children one of the key priority issues across UNICEF’s data and research, campaigns, policies and programming efforts. To support these efforts, UNICEF delivers in-depth research and analysis to provide the necessary evidence base.

How can you help make a difference?

Tasked with leading the data and research dimension of UNICEF’s global migration work, UNICEF’s Division for Data, Analytics, Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) conducts research on topics and concerns related to children on the move including child protection, risks and vulnerabilities, access to services, and education of migrant and forcibly displaced children to support UNICEF’s policy action work more broadly.

Under the guidance and mentorship of the Reporting Officer, the intern will support the migration unit in DAPM’s Data and Analytics Section. This will include:

  1. Supporting data and research on migrant and forcibly displaced children
  2. Undertaking desk reviews on key topics related to migrant and forcibly displaced children, in particular related to climate induced migration and displacement, which could include protection concerns, safe and legal migration pathways for children and their families, trafficking and exploitation, access to services (particularly education and health), and aspects of migration management.
  3. Preparing background research briefs on identified priority areas, selecting and analysing the most relevant information, to inform the drafting of global reports on identified priority themes.
  4. Identifying opportunities for knowledge sharing and facilitating cross-linkages on migration, through the course of the research.
  5. Liaising with other members of the team to participating in internal meetings as required.

Providing support on additional tasks as required.

To qualify as a champion for every child, you will:
