Purpose

A solution designed to close the learning poverty gap, the Learning Passport is an Online, Mobile, and Offline tech platform enabling high quality, flexible learning. The Learning Passport enables continuous access to education for children, youth, and teachers around the world and drive improved learning outcomes through high-quality, portable education to support their entry into other education or opportunity pathways, including formal education.

The purpose of the archivist library science intern is to help organize, source, upload, and catalogue curricular materials to meet various contexts for learners all over the world. Including different languages, file formats, and audiences of students, caregivers, and teachers.

The Archivist Library science intern will assist the Content Management Specialist in the sourcing, curation, cataloguing and uploading of open educational resources and partner curricular materials. Content will be uploaded to a custom learning management system based on the Microsoft Azure platform and will need to be organized by category, course, and lesson. Cataloguing will be continued in excel with fields such as tags, links, contact info, license type, audience, and subject matter. The purpose of cataloguing materials is for the content department to service content requests easily by dozens of countries with Learning Passport Country instances. Some familiarity and comfort surrounding technology and educational technology tools (or the willingness to learn) is imperative. Must be proficient in in English, a second language is a plus. Global repository knowledge is helpful and project management skills are a benefit. Some administrative and virtual assistance tasks will be expected surrounding email, communication, and scheduling. Monitoring of countries utilizing content for data analytics purpose will also be a part of the position.

The key duties and tasks for this internship are summarised as follows:

The open educational resource community has grown in recent years and because of it there are several opportunities for those studying library science to work in the field. The intern will learn more about creative commons licensing, what and how to adapt content for a localized context, and how to document and catalogue a complex database of resources. The intern will gain experience working in a humanitarian environment and will play a part in helping bridge learning gaps in some of the most underserved. The intern will gain transferable skills both in technology and interpersonal skills.

The intern will gain exposure to the UN system by contributing to the programme work in the Education programme group in UNICEF NYHQ. The intern will learn about open educational resources, learning management systems, educational technology, and the world of open educational resources from the lens of improving equity and access for all.

23 May – 19 August, 2022

Salary/Payment:

In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,700 per month. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the Education Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

This internship will be based in NYHQ but is fully remote. The intern will be expected to work 35 hours per week, but days and times are flexible within core work hours for NYHQ. This internship is within the Education Section and will report to the Content Management Specialist. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern may be expected to participate in Education section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

  • Education – Applicants who are degree candidates in the following areas are preferred - Library Science, Library information science, Digital Media Literacy, Archival Science. Other majors related to International Affairs, International Development, Education will also be considered.
  • Language – Must speak fluent English
  • You must have fast speed internet, access to a working computer with the ability to run Microsoft 365 products.
