Purpose and Objective:

The fight against HIV/AIDS is not yet over, despite remarkable progress over the past decade. UNICEF’s HIV/AIDS programming addresses HIV prevention, treatment and care for infants, children, adolescents and mothers. To reach an AIDS-free generation, UNICEF focuses on the unfinished business in supporting countries to prevent new infections among children, women and adolescents, to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and to bring and retain mothers, children and adolescents living with HIV in lifelong care.

The intern will provide direct programmatic and administrative support to the Knowledge, Advocacy and Partnerships team in the HIV/AIDS Section to develop content for and regularly update internal and external communication and knowledge management platforms, to support coordination of major events during a period of intense activity, to conduct literature reviews to inform the development of key knowledge products, to assist in the development of templates to be used to gather programmatic, political, research and/or data elements from country and partner organizations and to provide other programmatic and administrative support as needed.

The intern will gain exposure to increase their knowledge of the global HIV and AIDS agenda including the use of data for programming and advocacy, the elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV, pediatric treatment and care, adolescent HIV prevention, and the integration of services within other programmatic areas including maternal, newborn and child health issues. The intern will also interact with key partners in these arenas and apply and improve their writing and organizational skills.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist (Advocacy and Partnerships), the intern will assist in data gathering and knowledge building for advocacy and social media product for advocacy events (post HLM and WAD 2021) and conferences (ICASA and AIDS 2022).

Specific Roles & Responsibilities:

• Conduct literature review and support research and content development for advocacy and policy products on topics related to children, adolescents and HIV for World AIDS Day and ICASA 2020
• Assist in collecting country examples and drafting the outline for the Annual Results Report.
• Assist in curating information and editing key pieces and report, as needed.

• This internship will complement current academic training and provide exposure to the global EMTCT, pediatric and adolescent HIV development agenda.
• The intern will expand existing skills in technical writing, organizational and communication experience, gain hands-on experience organizing global meetings and apply newly acquired research skills to identify pertinent and timely content for the website, community of practice, literature reviews and tool development.
• This internship will provide the chance to test out potential career choices in the area of communications and advocacy and international public health, by gaining real-life experience in a culturally diverse international organization.

Duration

Estimated start in July 2021 (part time). Max duration – 26 weeks (full time).

Salary/Payment:

In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend based on $1,700/per month and a full-time internship. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the HIV/AIDS Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

The intern will be remote based and work from home. The intern will work with the HIV/AIDS Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the intern, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will…

Education and language requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) degree in the area of public/global health, medical anthropology, health communications/promotion, gender studies, social sciences or a related field, or have graduated within the last two (2) years;
• Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records;
• Excellent writing and organizational skills;
• Coursework or experience related to HIV programming is a distinct advantage;
• Knowledge of web content management systems and basic digital design is an advantage;
• Prior experience with technical and non-technical communication or advocacy is an advantage;
• Fluency in English is required
• Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese) is an asset.
