Purpose and Objective:

This internship will support the Implementation Research and Delivery Science (IRDS) Unit at UNICEF New York to carry out priority activities relating to data and digital health projects during the first half of 2021. The overall objectives of the internship are:

  1. to support UNICEF’s efforts to improve maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services in low- and middle-income countries.
  2. to develop a better understanding of UNICEF’s Health programming work and to help countries design and implement evidence-based, equity-focused health systems, policies and programmes.
  3. to gain exposure to how UNICEF operates across its global offices.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The intern will provide operational and technical assistance across a range of areas that will support UNICEF’s digital health work including:

  1. Support country mapping of digital tools and platforms that can be leveraged for the COVID-19 vaccine introduction through desk review and participation in calls with external and internal stakeholders
  2. Support digital health readiness assessment work in countries to prepare for COVID-19 vaccine introduction
  3. Support the creation of a page on our internal Digital Health Community of Practice that provides resources and guidance on how to effectively leverage digital health solutions for COVID-19 vaccine introduction
  4. Support the writing of case studies from countries that can be posted in the Global Health Newsletter, Yammer and other channels in UNICEF

Benefits to Intern:

The objective of the internship is to give the intern a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of the United Nations. The intern will be given a real chance to work with our people. As part of our team, working directly with outstanding and inspiring career professionals and senior management, the intern will be exposed to high-profile conferences, participate in meetings, and contribute to analytical work as well as organizational policy of UNICEF, especially in the field of COVID-19 vaccine introduction and digital health. Initially the intern will take on the amount of responsibility the intern can shoulder; the potential for growth, however, is theirs to develop.

Duration

January 2021 – July 2021. Maximum duration is 26 weeks.

Salary/Payment:

In accordance to UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,700 per month. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the Health Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

This internship will be done remotely with frequent virtual meetings conducted with members of UNICEF’s digital health team working at UNICEF’s Headquarters office in New York.

The intern will work with the Health Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an academic graduate program relevant to global public health
  • Basic knowledge of maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health issues and of health programs in low and middle-income countries
  • Have a specific interest in and knowledge of digital health technologies
  • Possess excellent English proficiency. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
