Org. Setting and Reporting The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.

This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with the Information Management and Data Analytics (IMDA) Unit of the Emergency Response Section (ERS). Located in the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD), which is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of OHCHR's country engagement strategies, the Emergency Response Section coordinates rapid response activities and provides specialized technical and operational support to field presences, geographic sections and OHCHR leadership in the areas of peace missions, early warning and preparedness, fact-finding, investigation, establishment and running of field presences and humanitarian action. The Emergency Response Section comprises the Risk Analysis and Prevention (RAP) Unit; the Humanitarian Action Unit (HAU); the Information Management and Data Analytics (IMDA) Unit and the Mission Planning and Start-up Unit.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the general guidance of the Head of the Section, in coordination with the Information Management (IM) and Data Analytics colleagues to support Information Management initiatives, the intern reports to the respective Coordinator/Information Management Officer in the area of assignment. The internship assignment shall be for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6) months, upon further approval by the supervisor, and a scheduled commencement date during the first quarter of the coming year, ranging/starting from February 2020 to February 2021.

This internship is an UNPAID and full-time engagement that provides a framework through which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the United Nations by way of their service within Secretariat entities. Applicants should have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Responsibilities The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.

Daily responsibilities of Information Management (Technical Communications, Design and Coordination) interns will depend on the individual's background and duties may include but are not limited to lending support to projects and/or activities within the Section, and in particular, the intern may: Assist in creating of a variety of info-graphics to explain existing and new information management tools, processes, skills, et cetera; Assist in creating animation or video products to explain existing and new information management tools, process, skills, et cetera; Investigate and design creative marketing plans and/or outreach plans for the products being created; Establish procedures around developing and maintaining a community of practice around tools and systems; Provide summary explanations to Emergency Response Section on the latest tools and emerging trends on the areas above and others related; Establish sustainable networks to foster community around the products and tools; Participate in information management discussions and the design of sustainable visualization solutions including templates and icons; and Perform other tasks as requested by the respective supervisor, as appropriate.

Education To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree), preferably in the area of communications, design, geographic information systems (GIS) or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period from the date of graduation.

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme though any relevant academic and/or practical experience with Adobe Illustrator, graphic design tools, video editing tools is desirable. Practical experience in coordinating user communities, setting up communication plans, developing technical communication tools, and GIS software is an advantage, as is research experience and published work in any of the above specified or related areas.

Work Experience Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

WORKING HOURS | Interns must adhere to the established weekly working hours of the duty station where the assignment is located though not exceeding five days per week (35 hours) and a one hours lunch break.
