The IRDS Unit supports the integration of research within existing health program implementation and policymaking cycles to improve program outcomes (e.g. coverage, sustainability, cost, scale) and overcome implementation bottlenecks. This embedded implementation research approach is led and informed by implementers with the meaningful engagement and support of researchers. It aims to enhance ownership of the research among implementers, and is designed to prioritize research on questions of local relevance, generate feasible recommendations and integrate evidence into programmatic decisions, policymaking and health system strengthening.

Purpose and Objective:

This internship will support the implementation research activities and management of IR knowledge products of IRDS unit of UNICEF. The overall objectives are:

  • To support mapping of the existing IR resources (i.e. IR experts, institutes, trainings, platforms) and update relevant database/websites accordingly.
  • To support in data management, analysis and report writing of different existing IR projects on immunization, MNCAH and gender.
  • To support in updating Tableau database on Pro-Equity Immunization and Health Systems Strengthening Strategies in selected Gavi-Supported Countries.
  • To support in organizing/re-structuring existing IR knowledge products for IRDS unit and develop appropriate advocacy materials
  • to develop a better understanding of UNICEF’s work on IR and support in exiting IR initiatives to promote effective program implementation in countries.

Given the increase in humanitarian situations related to disease outbreaks and public health emergencies, natural disasters and violent conflict, C4D needs to be able to contribute in developing tools and provide technical feedback on sectoral guidelines, training manuals and tools.

How can you make a difference?

  • The intern will provide operational and technical assistance that will support UNICEF’s IR initiatives across different health programs including immunization, primary health care (PHC), maternal, child and adolescent health (MNCAH) and gender:

    1. supporting IDRS unit as well as UNICEF’s efforts to IR and promote evidence-based health programs on maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services in low- and middle-income countries.
    2. generating new evidence (through literature reviews, data compilation and analyses) and managing existing IR related knowledge products to develop material for advocacy and support advocacy efforts for IR.

  • Will work closely with UNICEF country and regional offices to translate research into action and impact and gain exposure to UNICEF and how UNICEF operates across its global offices.

Duration

66 days (January 2nd to June 30th 2021), with some flexibility in timing

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the Heath Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

The intern will be remote based and work from home. The intern will work with the C4D Section and report to the supervisor of this internship. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have the following…

Applicants for this internship should:

  • be currently enrolled in an academic graduate program relevant to global public health
  • have basic knowledge of immunization, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health issues and of health programs in low and middle-income countries
  • have some knowledge on the use of digital technology and data science
  • possess excellent English proficiency. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Work experience in the field of operational and implementation research is an asset.

In addition, the technical competencies required for this post are:

  1. Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment, with excellent inter-personal skills and willingness to learn from others
  2. High standards for quality of work and consistently achieving project goals, even under tight timelines
  3. Identifies urgent and potentially difficult decisions and acts on them promptly.

Qualifications:

  • Education – Currently enrolled in Master's degree program in the area of Public Health
  • Language - Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Spanish and/or French will be an asset.
