Contract

This is a Internship contract. It usually requires 0 years of experience, depending on education. More about Internship contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, health

UNICEF works in diverse contexts across the globe. To best tailor resources to country needs, UNICEF examines and classifies country contexts according to income and government effectiveness, and periodically assesses the context (s) and prioritizes actions accordingly.

UNICEF’s vision for health is “a world where no child dies from a preventable cause and all children reach their full potential in health and well-being.” Integral to all UNICEF’s work in health, working together with global and local partners, UNICEF promotes three integrative approaches: addressing inequities in health outcomes; strengthening health systems, including emergency preparedness, response and resilience; and promoting integrated, multi-sectoral policies and programmes. In the new 2022-25 Strategic Plan, UNICEF is deeply committed to making progress on ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths. At the global level, UNICEF has prioritized 46 high-burden countries for high-impact survival programmes to help countries accelerate the scale up of essential packages of MNCH services and Immunization. These countries account for 87%+ of the global child mortality, 85%+ of the global neonatal mortality and 92%+ of the global maternal mortality. Not surprisingly, they also account for 86%+ of UNICEF average global spending on health at country level. These countries also include 25 of the 29 HIV high-burden countries emphasizing further the rationale to pursue the integration agenda. The list includes Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal and Philippines due to >10,000 child deaths and high UNICEF programme expenditure even though they are on-track on the ending preventable deaths target. Bangladesh and Nepal are also off-track in terms of still births, in addition to Venezuela and Syria who have had marked mortality increase in recent years. 15 of the 46 countries are countries in protracted humanitarian crises.

How can you make a difference?

The Health Programme narrative is clear: ending preventable deaths requires the delivery of quality high-impact child survival interventions and this is contingent upon strong primary health care that reaches the most vulnerable – the zero dose communities. Beyond the narrative, however, a deeper analysis is required for a more informed global and regional engagement in support of countries. This requires a review of country context, current programme coverage, health system bottlenecks/barriers, external/domestic financing for health and current UNICEF programmes in each country. This analysis is expected to improve knowledge management and provide useful recommendations for UNICEF’s engagement across a set of typologies of countries – including resource mobilization. The internship will be carried under the overall supervision and guidance of the Senior Programme Manager and in collaboration with Health teams, DAPM and ROs/COs.

The key duties and tasks:

  • Contribute to the development of an analytical framework and typology of countries for analysis.
  • Pilot the analysis for 3 high-burden countries utilizing country profiles, IHME data on health financing, UNICEF spending, SMQ data, UNICEF office situation analysis and country reporting.
  • Based on inputs to the analytical framework, extend the analysis to all 46 countries. Prepare short narratives and PowerPoint slides for each country.
  • Synthesize analysis based on the established typology of countries and present to relevant teams.
  • Prepare an overall narrative report for summary analysis and presentation.

Benefits to Intern:

The intern will gain a deeper understanding of UNICEF’s Global Health Programme 2022-25, and the programme and health system bottlenecks in high-burden countries. The intern will be given an opportunity to develop analytical skills to connect programme coverage, health sector financing and ODA. The intern will be given an opportunity to enhance communication and presentation skills.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
