The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in the Global Logistics Cluster, based in Rome, Italy.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline humanitarian agency addressing hunger and malnutrition worldwide. Due to its expertise in the field of humanitarian logistics, WFP was chosen to be the lead agency for the Logistics Cluster and maintains a Global Logistics Cluster (GLC) support unit hosted by the Supply division in WFP Headquarters in Rome.

Comprised of a diverse, multi-skilled group of logisticians, information management officers, and other technical specialists, the Logistics Cluster is mandated by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) to coordinate the logistics capabilities of co-operating humanitarian agencies during large-scale complex emergencies and natural disasters. The GLC is also tasked with advocacy on behalf of the cluster approach, training, preparedness, and the development of new tools and resources to benefit emergency humanitarian response operations. Within the operational support section of the GLC, specialties include the IMPACCT working group coordination, and Service Provision & Service Management, as well as general support to country operations.

The GLC strongly believes in the power of internship opportunities. Intern(s) will have the opportunity to learn about one or more of the functional areas, shadow staff members to learn about their roles and responsibilities, possibly be deployed to support country operations, training implementations, events or other activities, as well as the duties described in this vacancy.

The intern is expected to work on a full-time basis and based on flexible working arrangements.

GENERAL INFORMATION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

What you will do:

Under the direct supervision of the HR Officer the incumbent will:

  • Support activities related to data collection from various internal and external sources including benchmarking analyses.
  • Help conduct research, collate, and validate information where needed.
  • Contribute to quantitative and qualitative analysis, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.
  • Assist with drafting communication and training materials.
  • Support the leadership team with preparations of reports, presentations, and summarizing HR transactional data (strong writing skills.
  • Assist in process improvements based on data outcomes.
  • Assist with special projects in the FINF Branch, focusing on HR Business Partner initiatives to support
  • Strategic workforce planning gap-closing actions.
  • Help with auditing and improving HR data processes.
  • Leverage various tools and technology to analyse data and identify trends.
  • Partner with HR focal points to support the Branch.
  • Other tasks as required by the FINF branch.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate orgraduated studies completed, or recently graduated (within the past six months)
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.
  • The selected intern is not required to have professional working experience for participation in the internship programme though any academic and/or practical experience in humanitarian affairs, logistics and emergency preparedness is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; high attention to detail and proofreading ability; good research and analytical skills. Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure as part of a team; good communication skills; ability to work independently while asking questions and seeking support in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office package. Depending on the functional area needing support, specific skills and experience in areas such as knowledge management, information management, data analysis, IT programming, IT development, environmental sustainability, customer/client service, and facilitation may be an asset to the candidate.

WORKING LANGUAGES

  • Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
  • Intermediate knowledge (level B) in Spanish and / or French would be an asset

SUPERVISION

The position will be supervised by a Global Logistic Cluster officer

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Understand the work of the Logistics Cluster
  • Understand the work of the specific team assigned with the Global Logistics Cluster
  • Have had the opportunity to shadow a staff member to learn about their roles and responsibilities
  • Depending on context, may have had the opportunity to deploy to support a country mission, training event, or other activity
  • Have applied their knowledge and skills to benefit the work of the Global Logistics Cluster

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.

WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.

WFP will reimburse travel tickets for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.

WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.

Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
