Brief description:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide.

The Technology Division is driving the digital transformation of the World Food Programme for improved efficiency and effectiveness. We provide the Organization with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities to respond with both the immediate agility required in emergency situations, and the sustained, long-term ability to cope with natural disasters.

The Resource Management Branch is comprised of four units (Finance and Budget, Optimization, Planning and Control, Talent and Development) which promote effective planning and management of resources.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Contribute to collection of the Per Capita revenue through the recovery mechanism.
  2. Support the maintenance of financial information related to ICC invoices and development costs for intangible assets.
  3. Support the maintenance of financial information related to the development costs for the recognition of intangible assets.
  4. Support the maintenance of financial information related to in-kind contributions.
  5. Support the Budgeting & Financial Analyst with the preparation of consumption reports.
  6. Assist the Finance team with record keeping of relevant financial information
  7. Perform any other duties as required.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Support the preparation of the monthly consumption report that links monthly spending to the workplan: a monthly consumption report is issued at every month end allowing the monitoring of resources spent and their use with respect to planned activities
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports and/or costing models both on a recurring and upon request: financial information is clearly captured and presented in reports and/or cost models that facilitate informed decision making thereto

Qualifications and experience

  • Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate studies completed, or recently graduated in relevant discipline (including but not limited to: business management, public policy, social policy, science, information technology) or related field. (within the past six months)
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months;
  • Strong understanding of the humanitarian architecture.
  • Excellent command of English; Working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

Working Languages

Fluency (level C) in English language is required. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language.

Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of Head of Fund management and performance, the incumbent will provide support in preparation of accounting entries and collection of relevant financial information for budget preparations and overall cost controls.

Training components

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

At the end of the assignment, the intern should gather an understanding and exposure of:

  1. Internal processes and inter-divisional collaboration in a humanitarian organization.
  2. Overview of issues related to food security and responding to needs.
  3. Exposure to a wide range of topics and issues related to digital solutions and humanitarian response.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
