Background

All around the world, women and girls fear and experience sexual harassment and other forms of violence in public spaces, from unwanted sexual remarks or groping to rape and gender-related killings. It is a universal issue that occurs on streets, in and around public transportation, schools and workplaces, digital spaces, amongst others.

As a result, many women and girls do not enjoy the right to freedom of movement and their opportunities to work, study and participate in public life suffer. Access to essential services and enjoyment of culture and recreation are constrained. This negatively impacts their health and well-being.

The Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces is one of UN Women’s Flagship Programming Initiatives designed to ensure that UN Women can deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cities participating in UN Women’s Safe Cities Global Flagship initiative commit to i) the generation of evidence, building partnerships for change; ii) developing and implementing comprehensive laws and policies to prevent and respond to sexual violence; iii) investing in the safety and economic viability of public spaces, and iv) transforming social norms.
