The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme or have graduated within the past two years; and
  • Good oral and written skills in English and Portuguese is required, knowledge of French is an asset
  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of Search Engine of data collection.
  • Experience working with children / youth organisations is an advantage.
  • Knowledge /experience in child right,
  • Relevant communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.

Purpose of the internship:

UNICEF Child Protection interventions include protecting children, especially the most vulnerable, from all forms of violence, exploitation, abuse and harmful practices, all of which contributes to the achievement of targets in Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8 and 16. Specific areas of work include Social Services Workforce Strengthening, Justice systems strengthening, Children on the Move, Violence Against Children, Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. Child Protection response also includes prevention or response services for children affected by humanitarian crises and armed conflict, including in areas such as Mental Health and Psychosocial support, among others.

In Guinea-Bissau, UNICEF is supporting the Government, in collaboration with its partners, to strengthen the Child Protection system and promote social change to prevent and respond to violence against children in the country. At the downstream level, positive social norms and behavior change are being promoted, with interventions conducted at the community level to address Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. UNICEF is also working on the Civil registration system strengthening to improve the access of children to quality birth registration routine services.

The intern will be working at the Child Protection Programme, under the supervision of UNICEF Child Protection Manager, who is under the Deputy-Representative.

How can you make a difference?

  1. Close follow up of data gathering in Birth Registration by the civil registration officers using the RapidPro platform (a programme to collect routine civil registration data in real time, through SMS).
  2. Follow up on the RapidPro dashboard developed by the UNICEF regional office to review the accuracy on the data provided by the Guinea-Bissau civil registration officers and the dashboard information. Inter will interact with the Ministry of Justice's RapidPro Focal Point.

  3. Create tables/spreadsheets with information on current Birth Registration services, location, and data (especially those that working within health structures) and monitor the monthly data submitted via RapidPro/SMS. Intern will do a weekly review of data submitted.

  4. Work with the Child Protection Officer responsible for data gathering on violence against children, by contributing with the implementation of the pilot phase of data collection with the IMC/NGO/Civil Society.
  5. Possibility of traveling to country regions to monitor some activities in the field and collect data, information, and images.

Duration: The duration of the internship is three months with possible extension up to a maximum of 6 months. The candidates should indicate their availability in the cover letter.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems, especially in excel, statistics, and compilation and processing of data.
  • Knowledge in conducting a university research using data base is an asset.
  • Enrolled in a first-level or advanced level university degree in statistics (data-base management), computer sciences, social sciences with focus on project management, or related areas or have graduated within the past two years.
