BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. WFP Technology Division (TEC, formerly known as IT) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations, be they manmade or in a natural disaster setting. TEC Division continues to increase its activities to meet the constantly growing demand from the organization and to implement the initiatives related to digital transformation. Under the overall supervision of Global ETC Programme lead and under direct supervision of the ETC Preparedness Consultant, the intern will provide support in delivering emergency preparedness mandates within ETC and TECF.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Main responsibilities include, but not limited to:

• Publish annual ETC Country Prioritization Approach, including knowledge management package, and help in advocacy with partners, including training potential members of the humanitarian community on use/application.
• Devise and update at least 6 ICT Country Profiles pages on ETC website.
• Support in planning and execution on the Rate of Return on Emergency Preparedness Investment study, including support knowledge management on ROI.
• Support preparedness team in conducting situational analysis in active/projected implementation countries, including context-specific risk analyses.
• Do a bi-monthly high-level brief on projected disasters (with possible implications on the emergency telecommunications domain), based on credible early warning information sources.
• Support UAS deliverable of drafting Learning Paper I.e., an FCDO-related milestone, which intends to review WFP's approach to scaling the use of drones from 2019 to 2023 with a focus on lessons learned.
• Support in the development of the Cluster activation/de-activation assessment toolkit.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

• Support preparedness efforts including knowledge gathering and management specifically on ROI, Country prioritization and Country Profiles.
• Deliver lesson learn report/ paper on use of drones in humanitarian operations.
• Support the development of the Cluster Activation and De-activation assessment toolkit for WFP-ETC internal decision-making tool.
• Provide knowledge management and communications support, including capturing and sharing information on internal and external communications streams.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university;
• University course attendance in the past 12 months.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS****:

• Good knowledge of MS Office Suit: Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook.
• Strong written and spoken ability in English, at native/bilingual level.
• International experience is beneficial, especially in developing countries.
• Previous experience in the technology or disaster management sector is highly valued.

REQUIRED SOFT SKILLS/WFP COMPETENCIES:

• Good communications and excellent stakeholder management skills.
• Service-oriented detail-driven approach.

WORKING LANGUAGES

• Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
• Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language.

SUPERVISION

Under the overall supervision of Global ETC Programme lead and under direct supervision of the ETC Preparedness Consultant, the intern will provide support in delivering emergency preparedness mandates within ETC and TECF.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the intern should gather an understanding and exposure of:

• Working processes and inter-unit collaboration in a humanitarian organization, working with a WFP-led Cluster.
• Overview of issues related to emergency telecommunications preparedness and response.
• Exposure to a wide range of topics and issues related to emergency telecommunications preparedness and humanitarian response.

THE COUNTRY OF ASSIGNMENT –

Living conditions in Rome, Italy

The security situation in Italy remains in line with other European Countries. There are no specific threats against the UN in Italy. Considering the ongoing defeat of Daesh in the war territories, the trend in the short and mid-term will most likely continue to see the return of the militants to the countries of origins, including Italy. Insurrectional anarchism remains sufficiently organized on the Italian territory, as it has been present for many years. This movement could target the UN in the context of its anti-capitalism/anti-western narrative. 2) Whilst UN staff continue to be victims of minor crime such as street robbery and apartment break-ins, the infrequency of attacks and random nature of locations do not indicate that UN staff are at an elevated risk in comparison to residents or tourists in Italy. 3) Italy’s national territory is exposed to a broader range of natural hazards than any other European country. The vulnerability of its population and built environment is often severe and has in some cases been exacerbated by human activities.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will reimburse travel tickets for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
• Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
