Under the close supervision of both the Executive Manager of the Director’s Office (DO) and Lead Regional Desk Officer of the Humanitarian Field Support Section (HFSS) in the Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS), the incumbent will work 50/50 under both supervisors to support UNICEF’s humanitarian response across the regions. In addition to working with DO and HFSS, the intern will also work with HQ inter-divisional focal points, inter-agency partners, regional emergency staff and other field colleagues.

Responsibilities

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring closely the political and humanitarian developments in assigned countries and providing inputs to HFSS desks for timely, analytical and forward-looking assessments.
  • Analyzing and reviewing emergency preparedness in a defined allocation of countries, supporting UNICEF responses in complex emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Attending and providing readouts from inter-agency meetings on specific countries / thematic issues as well as from Security Council sessions.
  • Review of working papers and reports (including UNICEF situation reports) for accuracy and clarity.
  • Supporting in preparing for meetings of/with the Office of the Executive Director, Emergency Director, etc.
  • Performing other duties as might be assigned by supervisors concerned.

Learning Purpose and Opportunities:

Under guidance and advice in relation to hands-on training within the field of expertise, you will work with offices facing the world’s top emergencies, monitor emerging humanitarian risks and strategies, prepare for and mobilize immediate response to deteriorating situations, support UNICEF’s participation in key inter-agency activities, advocate with senior management and keep them duly informed, etc.

To be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited university graduate programme (or graduated within the past two years) in a social sciences discipline relevant to this internship.
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority to which you would be reporting.

*Additional consideration will be given to any past professional experience.

Languages

For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language (French, Arabic, Spanish or other), is an asset.

Salary/Payment:

As per UNICEF guidelines, an intern will be paid a stipend of US $1,700 per month if based in New York.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start the internship with the Health Section.

Visa Requirements:

Individuals are personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as proof of internship.

For internships in the US, the candidate needs to be eligible for a G4 Visa, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), be a Green Card holder or US Citizen.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
