Overview

Gain practical work experience in communication support for nuclear safety.

You have:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age
  • Have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree
  • Must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme
  • Good written and spoken English essential
  • Fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset
  • University degree in Communication, Design, Political Science, International Relations or a related field
  • Proficiency in MS Office 2010, which is the IAEA standard (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio), and the ability to use databases
  • Experience with the design and development of communication materials on complex technical topics (knowledge of Adobe suite programs, an asset)
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, promoting content and supporting graphic designs as well as monitoring

Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is:

To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;

To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Communication Advisor the intern will provide support in the implementation of outreach material, web-related activities conference/workshops/technical and network meetings in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and support the Department's social media account outreach efforts.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Support in logistical preparations for large meetings and conferences.
  • Support communication outreach for network and partnership efforts to widen awareness of the importance of nuclear safety and security.
  • Support and research of information for web related articles and social media to raise the visibility of nuclear safety and security.
  • Support in improving the department's web content and social media outreach efforts including overviews, graphic development as well as analyses and suggestions.
  • Draft and publish posts on a regular basis and produce and develop stories, features and other outreach material for use in social media, the web site and print.
  • Support in preparation of outreach material, such as leaflets, information brochures, newsletters, presentations, meetings and meeting notes.
  • Participate in the enhancement of information sharing or knowledge management systems.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Communication, Design, Political Science, International Relations or a related field;
