Under the overall guidance of the Head of SDG Impact, Finance and Innovation, the Communications Intern will work predominantly to support the SDG Impact, Finance and Innovation team in the communications function in the Country Office, ensuring that the Country Programme (CP) maintains visibility and strategic positioning, in line with UNDP corporate branding and communications priorities.

The Communications Intern will specifically be assisting in maintaining the day-to-day communications workflow of the Country Office in the digital and the physical event space. These include:

  • Support the development and implementation of UNDP in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam’s Communications Strategy, Annual Communications Plan and Key Performance Indicators for Communications;
  • Technical assistance and knowledge acquirement/management support during events or stakeholder engagements;
  • Graphic design and effective visualization of branding and promotional materials;
  • Support in raising the visibility of RR and DRR key messages in public events, external speaking engagements or social media;
  • Support content development for project stories, op-eds, talking points, press releases and/or social media posts;
  • Support the team with curation and coordination of events, campaigns, workshops highlighting the work of UNDP while building relationships within the ecosystem;
  • Organization and liaison with event management companies in support of programme and project team events;

The Communications Intern will work in close collaboration with other units in the Country Office , government officials, private sector, non-government and civil society organizations.

Play effective role in maintaining strategic positioning and visibility of UNDP Malaysia

  • Establish communication content in conjunction of key UN days
  • Collaborate closely with Communications team to develop posts, infographics or other materials for day-to-day updates of UNDP social media
  • Support development of communications materials necessary to convey key UNDP messaging in line with corporate guidance.
  • Amplify and enhance visibility of RR and DRR key messaging in their engagement with the partners/ during public events
  • Support the organization, technical set up of any physical events organized by UNDP/partners, including liaison and coordination with the event company or publishers.
  • Assist in promotion of key events to relevant stakeholders

Support the execution of CO Communication priorities and action plan

  • Carry out Communications workplan to enhance communications of key priorities of UNDP
  • Monitor the Communications Workplan monthly to ensure key targets for comms are achieved
  • Monitor key performance indicators of Communications regularly and share with the Bangkok Regional Comms Focal Point
  • Liaise with the programme, Gender/Learning teams and Digital Champions for the role of Communications that can support their priorities
  • Update existing media, think-tank, and government contact database

Learning and Knowledge Creation

  • Support in the development of knowledge products (e.g. blog, stories, social media post) in consultation with programme colleagues
  • Support in knowledge documentation of project and programmes
  • Support in logistics arrangement of key CO events.

Required Skills and Experience

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  • currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of studies;
  • currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
  • have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent studies; or
  • enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

Field of study: Communications, Public Relations, Business Intelligence, Political Studies or Social Science or equivalent.

IT skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office productivity tools;
  • Proficiency in Canva, PowerBI, Adobe Creative Suite or other graphic design/data visualization tools is an advantage

Language skills:

  • Working competencies in English and Bahasa Malaysia is required;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage;
  • Demonstrable writing skills with experience publishing in the local media

V. INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

  • UNDP will provide a stipend in the amount of RM637.50 monthly in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
  • Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.
