The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students a unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of an experienced UNICEF staff.

The purpose of this Internship is to support the Climate Change and Environment, Degradation Section in ROSA to mainstream climate and environment into UNICEF’s core programming, and to support UNICEFs efforts to make children and young people a focus of environmental strategies, and to empower children and young people to participate in climate and environmental action. More specifically the purpose of this internship includes:

• Coordinating with UNICEF Country offices in South Asia to research, consolidating data and information and conduct a mapping exercise of climate policies to date to determine the level of child and youth inclusivity in diverse sectors.
• Conduct an analysis and policy note detailing results of the mapping focus on key sectors (i.e. WASH, Education, Health).
• Providing technical support to the Climate Change and Environmental Degradation Unit for planning and programming.
• Support the development of investment cases on building climate and environment action with children and young people.
• Support the development of knowledge products on climate, energy, environment, and disaster risk reduction as required.

How can you make a difference?

• Liaise with Country Office Staff in South Asia to collect information to develop analysis, policy briefs, and guidance notes on making children and young people a focus of climate and environmental strategies.
• Liaise with Country Office Staff in South Asia to collect information for the development of climate and environment case studies for different sector and audiences.
• Recommendations provided to core sections with technical inputs on mainstreaming CEED into Education, WASH, Nutrition, Social Protection sections, among others, including assessment of gaps, opportunities, and proposed guidance towards scaling UNICEFs mainstreaming of CEED into key sectors.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

• Enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years in business, economics, development and/or environmental sciences and related fields.
• Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.

Skills:

• Strong communication skills, written English skills, and ability to write clearly, succinctly and for a variety of audiences.
• Knowledge of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and computer skills such as SharePoint.
• Knowledge of and interest in South Asia news is an asset.
• Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to distil lengthy and often complex content into brief summaries
• Prior experience with climate, energy, environment, and disaster risk reduction in developing country contexts would be a considerable asset.
• Have no immediate relatives (e.g., father, mother, brother, or sister) working in any UNICEF office; and  Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
• Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Remarks:

The intern will be remote based and work from home. The intern will work and report to the Climate Change and Environment Degradation Advisor in ROSA. The intern is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis. This advert is being used to select three (national/international) interns.

Payment Methodology: Monthly stipend in line with UNICEF policy.
