Duties and Responsibilities

ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is located in the West Asia Office in Beirut Duty Station under the direct supervision of the Deputy Regional Director. Under the guidance of the Administrative Unit, the Intern will be expected to, inter alia, carry out the following duties and responsibilities: Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Assist in organizing action and work plans in areas of human resources, financial management, travel, procurement, office management and general administration. - Source, gather and organize data, from different sources, for development/update of Standard Operating Procedures, Guidelines, checklists, templates, and Orientation Booklet specific to the West Asia Office. - Assist in updating Inventory, staffing table, staff profiles/folders, staff directory, tracking sheets and other electronic filing systems/records. - Monitor progress of the action plans and follow up with the relevant offices at HQ, UNON and other service providers. - Assist in the day-to-day management of the office logistical operations and inventory of assets. Assist in obtaining quotations. - Assist in preparation of monthly and other ad-hoc financial reports, budget monitoring reports, and assist in following up of payments with UNON/Budget and Financial Management Services. Assist in preparation of cost estimates and status of open commitments. - Carry out any other additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the administrative unit.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred Area of Study: Business Management and Administration, Financial Management, Human Resources, Procurement and Logistics, or other related field. Familiarity with ERP Systems (Enterprises Resources Planning)

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: "Fluency" equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
