The Paraguay Country Office (CO) started in March 2020 the implementation of the new country programme for the 2020-2024 period which includes a) a strong focus on public advocacy and engagement with government, donors and other key social actors at national and international level, b) an increased focus on intersectoral programming and implementation of innovative and demonstrative projects at local level, and c) resource mobilization with multilateral and bilateral cooperation agencies, competitive funds and private sector organizations at national, regional and global levels. A whole office approach to leverage all areas and capacities of the CO to realize strategic results for children is critical to achieving the goals outlined in the country programme. This internship seeks support to put in place management systems that can facilitate implementation of activities aligned with the areas outlined above, mechanisms to track progress in each of those areas, recommendations on the use of innovative approaches to facilitate intersectoral coordination and support to implementation of key initiatives in specific sectors (i.e. education).

How can you make a difference?

The Paraguay CO´s new country programme seeks to implement innovative programming approaches such as its focus on early years, adolescents and evidence and data generation as the overarching outcome areas and to engage in dynamic resource mobilization efforts. This requires greater sectoral coordination both internally and with partners, improved management systems that facilitate coordination and synergies across sectors, and regular and strategic engagement with government, donors and civil society partners. As an important member of the project team, this internship is being established to support the Office of the Paraguay Representative.

Main tasks:

    • Assist the Office of the Country Representative in strategic activities and engagements (i.e. resource mobilization, political advocacy, annual reviews and reports, workplace environment).
    • Prepare briefings for political advocacy and engagement with government, technical cooperation, civil society, media and other relevant social actors and partners.
    • Support the preparation and review of resource mobilization proposals including identification of funding pportunities, coordination of technical inputs, timetables for submission of proposals and follow up as needed.
    • Liaise with Communication, Operations and Programme teams in relevant initiatives as required by the Office of the Country Representative (i.e. engagement with media outlets)
    • Participate in select technical meetings of programme areas (i.e. education) as required by the Country Representative, prepare briefs and reports of key issue, and follow up on action points.
    • Document one of the CO´s experiencies about a topic to be determined (based on expertise and training and on relevance to the CO programme) and deliver an open presentation to CO and partners.
    • Prepare a final report of lessons learned and recommendations for future internships.

Deliverables:

  • 6-8 advocacy briefs and/or PPT presentations for engagement with donors, government, UN, media and other relevant partners.
  • Reports about strategic engagement and meetings with relevant stakeholders and partners.
  • Assist in the preparation of 3-4 resource mobilization proposals.
  • Repository of relevant resources and materials for resource mobilization.
  • Reviews of draft annual reports and recommendations for final draft.
  • Case study or paper about one of the CO´s programme initiatives and technical presentation to the CO team and partners.

Modality: Full-time (depends on the schedule), Paid

Start date: Tentatively 16 August 2020.

Workplace: Asuncion, Paraguay (initially teleworking due to Covid-19 and possible in-country presence if conditions permit)

Duration: 20 weeks

Reporting to: The intern will report to the Paraguay Country Office Representative, working closely with the Executive Assistant and the Programme Manager.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years, in international affairs, political science, business management, or relevant fields in the area of UNICEF work.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English is required and proficiency in French or other languages would be an asset
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office.
  • Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
  • A relevant background in managing projects, training or other coordination.
  • Familiarity with research would be helpful.
  • Experience/skills in the use of virtual learning and delivery tools – mentimeter, zoom etc would be useful.
  • Familiarity and skills in assisting virtual workshops are considered an asset but not essential.
  • Developing country work experience is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
