UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, hope

The upcoming EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child, under the responsibility of the EU Vice-President for Democracy and Demography Šuica, constitutes a key opportunity to put children’s rights in the highest political agenda of the EU and make them an integral part of EU policies and practices in a holistic and comprehensive way. The new comprehensive strategy should include actions to protect vulnerable children, protect their rights online, foster child friendly justice, and prevent and fight violence. It will also include actions to strengthen the protection of children in migration, and the participation of children in the EU political and democratic life. The strategy will encompass actions relating to both the internal and external dimension of EU policies.

Together with the UNICEF Offices for Relations with the EU Institutions in Brussels (the Brussels Office), the Child Rights Programming and Advocacy Team in UNICEF’s Private Fundraising and Partnerships division (PFP) is coordinating efforts within UNICEF to consult children in support of the EU Strategy on Child Rights. In its support role to UNICEF’s National Committees on advocacy, programming and policy (including on child and youth engagement), the Child Rights Programming and Advocacy team in PFP supports the Brussels Office in its efforts to consult with children and young people to inform the upcoming EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child.

In addition to the EU Child Rights Strategy, the Child Rights Programming and Advocacy team in PFP works on a wide range of programming and advocacy issues in high-income countries, with an aim to advance the respect, protection and fulfillment of child rights by national and sub-national governments and other stakeholders.

How can you make a difference?

In order to inform the development of the new EU Child Rights Strategy, the European Commission has announced the launch of a Public Consultation in Q2 of 2020. This Public Consultation will consist of an on-line process as well as dedicated meetings to gather input from a wide range of stakeholders, including consultations with children both in and outside the EU. UNICEF has committed to contribute to meaningful child participation in the consultation process through child friendly adapted consultations to take place from Sept-Oct 2020. Following the end of the consultation phase in October 2020, UNICEF will be leading the analysis of collected data and the drafting of a public-facing report on the findings, which will be submitted to the European Commission by the end of November 2020.

This internship is subsequently established to:

  • Support the analysis of findings from the consultations, including focus group discussions.
  • Analyze and distill information collected through other consultation processes.
  • Analyze and distill existing recommendations to the EU made by UNICEF and other partners in order to incorporate them in the final report.
  • Support child participation research as necessary.
