Background and Purpose of Assignment:

Bangladesh has an Essential Service Package for Primary Health Care and an Essential Medicine List that is required for the delivery of the Essential Service Package.

Childhood pneumonia remains one of the major childhood killers in Bangladesh. Severe pneumonia is currently dependent on an inpatient treatment protocol, yet evidence exists that an outpatient approach is possible using a day care approach. The medication used in this approach is not yet fully integrated to the Essential Medicine list.

Paediatric Non-Communicable Diseases are neglected in the public health system in Bangladesh until recently. Currently, UNICEF is working with the MoHFW undertaking a landscape analysis for paediatric NCDs and the review of the Essential Medicine List needs to be done to prioritize the medicines required for paediatric NCDs in Bangladesh. UNICEF would like to hire an intern for helping with the review of the Essential Drug List for severe pneumonia and NCD. With the goal to understand what different steps are taken during a process of reviewing an Essential Drug List.
