UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfil their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone. And we never give up.

The UNICEF Internship Program in Ethiopia offers qualified university students and recent graduates a unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

Purpose of the internship:

U-Report is a messaging tool that empowers young people around the world to engage with and speak out on issues that matter to them. It works by gathering opinions and information from young people on topics they care about – ranging from employment to discrimination and child marriage. U-Reporters respond to polls, report issues and support child rights. The data and insights are shared back with communities and connected to policy makers who make decisions that affect young people.

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist (Refugee Coordinator/Youth Engagement Specialist and with engagement with the Social Policy Officer), the U-Report intern will play a key role in assisting the U-Report and Youth Engagement initiative in Addis Ababa to build a strong U-Report community.

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Assisting in creating engaging and informative content for the U-Report Ethiopia social media accounts – Facebook - Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram to increase follower engagement and reach.
  • Actively engaging with followers and responding to their queries and comments on social media platforms.
  • Conducting mapping of the activity of U-Report in social media management and support in new strategies to improve the reach and impact of U-Report Ethiopia.
  • Collaborating with the Social Policy Officer and other team members to develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to increase the number of U-Report participants in Ethiopia.
  • Coordinating online with youth organisations to gather ideas and input for promoting U-Report Ethiopia.
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of virtual youth discussions or events in collaboration with the U-Report team.
  • Attending virtual meetings and conferences related to U-Report Ethiopia and providing comprehensive reports to the team.
  • Assisting in monitoring and analysing U-Report Ethiopia data and providing feedback to identify areas for improvement and inform decision-making processes.
  • Supporting the team in any other tasks related to the success and functionality of U-Report Ethiopia and activity, including the 20th of November U-Report launch.

Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be enrolled at a university at the undergraduate, graduate, or PhD level or be a recent graduate (within the past two years) in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Social Sciences or a related degree.
  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • The intern must be at least 18 years old.

Key Considerations for Applicants:

Female candidates are highly encouraged to apply. Persons that identify as having a disability are also highly encouraged to apply.

Note that UNICEF Ethiopia interns receive a nominal monthly stipend for the duration of the assignment. Interns are responsible for their travel and living expenses. Interns are personally responsible for obtaining any required visa, covering the entire period of their internship. If necessary, UNICEF will support the process by providing relevant documents such as the proof of internship.
