How can you make a difference?

To determine the prevalence of FGM and associated factors among girls aged 0-14 years in Nigeria through the examination of NDHS (2018) and MICS data (2016/2017, 2021) and relevant literature on FGM.

Under overall guidance of the Chief, Child Protection, the Consultant will support the Country Office in the following main areas of work and tasks in line with the MHPSS initiative and building on existing work on MHPSS in the country.

  1. Conduct a detailed desk review of primary data from NDHS 2018, MICS 2016/2017, and MICS 2021, and secondary data on FGM prevalence, drivers and associated factors among girls aged 0-14 years in Nigeria and programs in place that contribute to the elimination of FGM in Nigeria.

  2. Analyse information gathered from the FGM National and State Technical Working groups and stakeholders to gather perspectives and enhance the analysis.

  3. Develop an inception report (not exceeding 20 pages) providing an overview of initial findings from the desk review, proposed methodologies, and a comprehensive work plan outlining tasks, milestones, and deadlines for the entire study duration.

4. Provide a progress report detailing advancements in data analysis, literature review, and stakeholder insights.

  1. Address any emerging issues and their impact on the study timeline in the interim report.

  2. Conduct a detailed analysis of FGM hotspots (MICS 2016/17 and 2021 and DHS 2018).

7. Investigate factors influencing the decline or increase of FGM in the five states with programmatic activities.

  1. Propose evidence-based recommendations for policy and program improvements based on the study’s findings.

  2. Identify strategic interventions for reducing and ending FGM in Nigeria.

10. Develop a comprehensive final report presenting detailed insights and analysis of FGM prevalence and drivers. Including an executive summary, methodology, key findings, action recommendations, and appendices. Develop a corresponding concise powerpoint presentation of the key findings from the study with recommendations.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

· An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) or academic background in international development, public health, econometrics, data science and related field

· Excellent research and analytical writing skills.

· Strong data science background and proven experience working with rigorous data and development of sound analysis and interpretation of data to inform robust programme planning and implementation in the area of public health, child protection, FGM, social norms, in addressing sensitive protection issues and

· Ability to work with and manage various stakeholder expectations such as government officials, donors, and grassroot organizations and work within strict timelines

· Proven knowledge and experience in the fields of child protection and gender and related fields

· Strong communication capacity in written and spoken English

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
