Background:

In 2021 UNICEF Child Protection (CP) Section experienced meaningful changes in terms of the modality of implementation, in which the main goal is the scalability and sustainability of harmful practices preventive programs.

In Bangladesh, violence against women and children (VACW) and harmful practices (HP) remain prevalent 9 out of 10 children below the age of 14 years have experienced physical punishment and psychological aggression by caregivers in the previous month. More than half of the children in the country, 51%, are married before they reach the age of 18. As many as 1.2 million children are engaged in the worst forms of child labour. Child Protection Programme focuses on promoting positive norms and shifting social norms and practices that impact the lives and development of children, including adolescents, their families and communities. This involves strong engagement with parents, families and communities to shift negative social norms and to refer vulnerable children and families to appropriate social service systems, to prevent VACW and other harmful practices, including online violence, and violence in schools.

Finally, an expansion in collaboration with relevant government ministries, in the framework of a new country program cycle starting from January 2022 until 2026, is bringing the Section to invest further in building the capacity of partners in line with the new child protection strategy note and the violence against children strategy.
