How can you make a difference?

The purpose of this consultancy is to support the UNICEF Office for South Asia (ROSA) Communication & Advocacy Section with the overall planning, designing and production of content on child rights issues covering but not limited to education and learning recovery, early child development (ECD), nutrition, climate action, mental health and child protection, primarily for parenting and caregiving audiences, as well as youth audiences. The consultant will plan, draft and produce innovative communications assets such as web articles, explainers, social media content, and other written and multimedia products for ROSA to build reach and engagement with parenting and caregiving audiences as well as with youth audiences. The consultant will also support the formulation and development of related advocacy plans and regional messaging to further UNICEF’s regional advocacy priorities covering education, climate change, nutrition, and others. The consultant will also support ROSA’s youth engagement initiatives, including the Content Creator Lab.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

Content production

  • Research and produce 12 timely and audience-tailored web articles linked to parenting and caregiving and youth audiences on topics including early childhood development, early childhood education, nutrition, girls’ rights, menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health, climate resilience and mental health; liasing with UNICEF sections, country offices and HQ for fact-checking, feedback and message coordination.
  • Work directly with adolescent girls and boys, as well as young men and women in South Asia, and in collaboration with ROSA’s Digital Team, to produce 4 regional social media packs incorporating new and engaging multimedia materials for youthfriendly platforms (including but not limited to Instagram and TikTok);
  • Support ROSA’s youth engagement initiatives, including the Content Creator Lab to produce 20 videos.
  • Support with ad hoc content ideation and creation during emergencies and crises as required under the overall supervision of the Regional Chief of Communication and Advocacy, including the creation of 4 regional key messages packs.
  • Consolidate and share 8 monthly consolidated analysis for the duration of the contract covering content performance, new social listening insights, and emerging new opportunities to respond to needs, concerns and questions from online communities.

Ad hoc support and backup during emergencies and crises

  • Support the Communication and Advocacy section with implementing external events linked to education, nutrition, child protection moments.
  • Provide backup support as needed in writing media materials (statements, press releases, news notes, fact sheets) during staffing shortage and/or during suddenonset emergencies and crises.
  • Where relevant and needed, adapt and localize latest content and articles for parenting and youth audiences produced by UNICEF headquarters, regional offices, and Country Offices, to be shared with Country Offices in the region.

Due dates may shift due to unforeseen circumstances and with agreement of the supervisor/manager without need for amendments if the overall fee remains the same.

The language of all the deliverables will be in English.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education: ​​

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media and/or Communication or related fields integrating digital and social media platforms - Website, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Tik Tok, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.

Experience:

  • Two years practical professional work experience in developing engaging and educational content for web and social media platforms for UN agencies, NGOs, or the development sector.
  • Demonstrated technical communication and multimedia skills (copywriting, editing, storyboarding, video production, photography).
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic use of social listening insights and social media monitoring tools for content planning and development and performance analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people to ideate and create compelling content, including Reels and TikTok.
  • Experience in working with UNICEF, UN agencies, NGOs or the development sector. ​

Language Requirement:

  • Excellent command over written and verbal English language is a must

Competencies:

  • Displays knowledge and understanding of web and social media platforms, their respective reach and how each platform can best be leveraged for different audiences.
  • Highly proficient in content development and editing.
  • Ability to write flawless, compelling and audience-tailored copy in English, especially for web and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in both written and verbal format.
  • Experience in knowledge management is an asset.
  • Existing experience in or knowledge of South Asia, including the South Asia digital landscape, is an asset.
  • Knowledge of child rights issues is an asset.
  • High ethical standards and understanding of sensitivities relating to children is required.
  • Highly organized.
  • Both a team player and an individual contributor.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
