Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination and violence against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security.

The UN Women office in Ethiopia plays a dual role, representation to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and representation to Ethiopia. In this regard, under its regional function, the Ethiopia country office engages with the AU and its various organs, the United Nations system particularly ECA, regional CSOs and international NGO, as well as the diplomatic community and in particular, delegations to the African Union.

CSOs are UN Women’s most important constituents. UN Women has long standing relation with women’s movement and brings their voices, capacities and contributions in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment, their voices, capacities and contributions in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

As such, UN Women proposes to provide technical support to the Gender Is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC Network) in convening of the 38th Virtual Pre-summit CSOs Consultative meetings and the joint advocacy initiatives to amplify the role of women in leadership. The GIMAC Network is a leading Pan-African network of African women and civil society organizations working towards empowerment of women and girls in Africa particularly through the implementation of key major regional and international gender equality instruments. The 38th Pre-summit aims to advocate for strategic continental policies that advance the rights and empowerment of women and girls in line with Agenda 2063 and Maputo Protocol on Women’s Rights to provide recommendations and influence the AU, define interventions points and participate in the policy meetings of the AU Summit.

Moreover, UN Women as part of its effort to ensure the voice of the youth is meaningfully reflected in all its activities, jointly with GIMAC, particularly on the role of young women in peace and security. The activities planned between 15 June and 15 August 2021 are;

- Th****e road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of young women for peace and security June 20 to July 20 2021: A month long social media campaign that will culminate in a multi-stakeholder policy dialogue and aims to document the work and efforts of youth, in particular young women in creating lasting peace in Africa.

- 6****t****h GI****M****A****C Youth Advocacy Training scheduled 27 June 2021: will be a space for young

women and girls to deliberate on their role and engagement on the GIMAC Network yearly theme aligned to AU theme of the year, i.e. 3rd GIMAC’s Strategic Engagement with AU, RECs and Partners on the AU Theme of the Year.

- 38****t****h GI****M****A****C CSOs Meeting 27 to 29 June 2021: will bring together institutional leaders,

renowned women leaders, young women and civil societies, in a well-designed citizen’s engagement model that will create a platform for open and frank discussions on the progress and milestones achieved in Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, the existing and emerging challenges such as COVID19 that threat to reverse or decelerate the accumulated gains; the theme of the 38 GIMAC, sharing best practices and experiences that are crucial in translating Gender responsive action.

To this end, UN Women Ethiopia is seeking to engage the services of an international consultant to support social media visibility in preparation of the above planned joint e-events and other joint initiatives to be implemented within the 2 months period. The consultant will also support with documentation as well as sharing of key outcomes of the meeting.

Duties and Responsibilities

The communication consultant will be required to undertake the following:

- Develop creative and innovative ideas for print, electronic, web-based and design and layout of reports and other products.

- Design of reports and other communication materials for printing and electronic distribution.

- Improve and edit artwork, photos, charts and other graphic elements.

- Layout and design information and communication materials (banners, posters, bulletins, flyers)

- Create different illustrative materials such as animation, gifs, and presentations ( and design of CD/DVD packaging

- Custom photo editing

- Infographic, graphic design for network activities, banners, fliers, social media posts, and other creative multimedia content to support the implementation of the advocacy during the contract period.

• Good knowledge of the African Union

Other Relevant Skills The Communication consultant will be required to be computer literate, have excellent writing, analytical and communicative skills and be flexible in terms of working hours

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • A degree in Communication, Arts and creative design, Journalism, Political science, Gender studies, Peace and Security or related field with

Experience

  • A minimum of four years relevant experience.
  • Experience in the design and management of advocacy campaigns will constitute a sold advantage.

Language

  • Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of French will constitute an advantage.
