Organizational Setting

FAO Gambia and partners are implementing the Climate Fishery Initiative for Livelihood Improvement in the Gambia (PROREFISH Gambia) project. The Project aims to address increased resilience and enhanced livelihoods, health, wellbeing, food and water security of the most vulnerable people, communities and regions. The project will scale up adaptation measures that have been proven in a number of countries in West Africa, and in similar contexts, with a particular focus on supporting the development of aquaculture production, aiming to increase overall fish availability and enhance the incomes of poor fisher folk and farmers, by promoting aquaculture production through different technologies, including oyster cultivation and rice-fish farming, among others.

Reporting Lines

The expert will be under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in The Gambia, the Technical Supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO) and the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matter, and Department of Fisheries, the incumbent will be responsible for transferring technical know-how on aquaculture to fisheries extension staff/officers.

Technical Focus

The Expert will focus the trainings on technical knowledge transfer to the participants and to ensure that they are adequately equipped with technical knowledge on new developments in aquaculture and aquaculture management.

Tasks and responsibilities

The Trainings will focus on the following thematic areas:

• Introduction and trends of Aquaculture in Africa • Role of Aquaculture in improving Livelihoods • Impacts of Climate Change on Aquaculture, with particular reference to adaptation measures and coping strategies • Role of gender on aquaculture in Africa • Types, methods and systems of aquaculture • Sites selection in aquaculture, with reference to soil type and topography of site • Basic principles in pond construction, with reference to components of a fishpond and their specifications • Species selection in aquaculture, with particular reference to Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias spp) • Water quality and availability in aquaculture • Fish (African Catfish and Tilapia) diseases (Agents, Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment) • Theoretical sequence in induced hatchery production of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias anguillaris) • Pond preparation for stocking • Farm Management: Feed and feeding, monitoring for fish growth and selection, productivity enhancement, harvesting and records keeping, transport and commercialisation, business plan and cash flows.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in remote sensing, GIS/RS, forestry, environmental sciences, or a closely related field • At least 8 years of practical and professional working experience in the relevant field, including experience in rural community development.. • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian. For PSA.SBS working knowledge is sufficient.
