What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the position

The Internal Communication Officer (digital engagement) leads efforts to deliver compelling and engaging content on internal communication digital platforms, promoting engagement and providing staff with critical and timely information. S/he ensures a clear vision and definition of digital engagement within the organization and advises the head of unit on platforms, tools, analytics and plans to strengthen digital engagement. S/he revises and curates content for the intranet and other internal communication channels, such as communities. S/he supports staff in generating content. The role calls for an ‘inclusive mindset’, necessary for working inclusively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and helping drive engagement across a range of cultural/social issues.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Ensures accurate, timely and effective production and delivery of compelling digital content, optimized for engaging with our internal audiences;
  • Contributes to editorial decisions, making sure digital content is well formatted, relevant, timely, user-centric and oriented to staff working globally, in the field;
  • Supports staff in generating content through guidance and a content plan;
  • Strengthens staff content production skills and quality through capacity building activities, including coaching and training;
  • Works closely with the “editorial strategy and engagement manager” in developing compelling digital content, from written materials to audio visual and graphic materials, supporting our editorial strategy;
  • Monitors and evaluates engagement with digital platforms using and developing a range of analytical tools, to inform an effective content strategy;
  • Advises on internal communication tools and platforms to enhance staff engagement;
  • Provides digital communication advice on the use of relevant internal communication channels /platforms, such as the intranet, webinar platforms, townhalls or collaborative spaces;
  • Works closely with the head of internal communication in developing and implementing digital proposals and plans to translate complex institutional priorities and projects;
  • Works in close partnership with file holders in project management mode and advises and implements internal communication digital plans accordingly.

Education required

  • Advanced university degree in communication-related fields;
  • Proficiency/Native English level;
  • French an asset;
  • Excellent writing skills (English).

Professional Experience required

  • Previous work experience (6 years minimum) in communication, preferably internal and/or digital communication, either within the ICRC or in complex organizations with geographically dispersed staff. Experience in staff engagement on D&I is an asset;
  • Experience in using digital communication to engage with geographically and culturally diverse communities;
  • Understanding of digital analytics, tools and platforms;
  • Experience in translating complex institutional documents into simple and concise key messages;
  • Experience in developing various communication products (print and online), including with external agencies;
  • Experience in digital engagement, journalism, production, marketing or copywriting;
  • Experience in using social media (blogs, fora, internal social networks);
  • Experience in capacity building and training a strong asset;
  • Good understanding of the ICRC and/or the international humanitarian sector in general a strong asset;
  • ICRC field experience a strong asset.
