UNICEF Nepal Country Office continues to advocate for investing in children at the federal, provincial and local levels to maximize the potential of Nepal’s young population, and supports Nepal’s renewed commitments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNICEF’s programmes for 2018-2022 will focus on areas related to health; nutrition; child protection; education; water, sanitation and hygiene; and social protection. Aside from these, early childhood development, adolescents, disability, gender as well as disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation are issues that will be tackled across sectors.

How can you make a difference?

Join our Nepal Country Office team to contribute in programme design and implementation, evaluation of activities within the education programme, with a particular focus on early education with improved equity. Further, the post will support cross-sectoral coordination required for integrated early childhood development programmes.

The main duties and responsibilities include:

1. Support the development/planning of strategies and activities related to the alternative early education and provide technical support to partners and colleagues for their implementation. Particular attention will be paid to devising and implementing strategies for marginalized children’s access to early education (with a special focus on children with disability and children in remote areas). Collect and analyse data for the situation analysis, project planning, management, monitoring and evaluation purposes. Analyse programme implementation reports and evaluates in relation to established programme recommendations and plans of action. Report the outcome of analyses and proposes corrective actions.

2. Undertake monitoring visits to project sites namely in the area for alternative early education, but also in other areas of education and integrated ECD programmes. Assess local conditions and resources, and monitor UNICEF inputs and activity outputs. Coordinate and communicate with local counterpart authorities and partners on the formulation/implementation of the project, including the flow of supply and non-supply assistance.

3. Maintain an information database of key indicators and key figures useful for assessing the project outcomes. Prepare reports or parts of proposals/reports/documents as necessary, especially on early education.

4. Contribute to other duties related to the effective implementation of the education programme (including participation in coordination meetings etc.). Assist in the identification of necessary supplies for programme implementation.

The JPO training programme includes the following learning elements

  • JPO Orientation Programme – Designed towards development of professional skills and personal insights into performance and collaboration and create and understanding of how the organization functions and carries out its missions around the world;
  • E-learning opportunities in performance management: create the conditions for high performance and development;
  • E-learning opportunities on basic UNICEF programme & operational Strategies: assimilate UNICEF’s approaches to programming and operations; thematic programme areas; as well as cross-cutting function areas;
  • JPO Coaching, Mentoring and Buddy Programme – driven by individual needs and targeted towards insights into organizational culture and targeted training opportunities and support.
  • Stretch assignments- goes beyond the current job description and creates an opportunity to learn new skills in a different Duty Station, Division or Section.
  • Career Transition Programme tailored to support the JPOs in their final year with their future career aspirations

The JPO position includes a Duty travel and training allowance (DTTA) of $4000 per year which may be used for learning activities related to the assignment and career development.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Citizenship of Finland

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Early Childhood Development, Education: Pre-primary education, Social Sciences, or a field(s) relevant to international development assistance.
  • Specialization on alternative early education, child-friendly (quality) schools, equity issues is considered an asset.

Work experience:

  • Two years of professional work experience at national and international levels in relevant Education programmes.
  • Experience working in the UN or other international development organization(s) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in inclusive education is an asset.
  • Work experience in a developing country is considered an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Basic knowledge of Finnish or Swedish is required.
  • Fluency in another UN language is considered an asset.
  • Fluency or Willingness to learn local working language of the duty station (Nepali) is considered an asset.
