Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is the main legislative organ of ESCAP and reports to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) provides guidance to divisions, subregional offices and regional institutes on the implementation of the ESCAP programme of work and on ensuring its accountability. It also provides direction on the mainstreaming of policies and strategies relating to gender equality and the empowerment of women, as well as on disability inclusion, across the programme of work and to programme support units. This position is located in the OES. The intern works under the supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer. The internship is UNPAID and full-time for the duration of 3-6 months. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours). Interns will gain first-hand experience with regards to the activities of the OES, a greater understanding of how ESCAP works and its range of activities in the Asia-Pacific region. They will also have direct exposure to the implementation of ESCAP's flagship intergovernmental meetings such as the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development and the Commission Session. Responsibilities The internship is centred on assisting the OES in discharging a range of tasks related to website information management, public information, knowledge management and programme management support, and includes the following responsibilities: - Assists with the creation and updating of website content and communication materials; - Management and creation of internal SharePoint sites including access management; - Perform tasks related to strategic communications and public information; - Uploads knowledge management products to the external website; - Undertakes special projects related to communications and information shared by the OES; - Undertakes review and analysis of internal administrative procedures and recommends improvements with the use of technology including MS Office tools; - Researches and proposes solutions to budget monitoring activities; - Prepares checklists and templates related to standard operating procedures; - Performs tasks related to website migration; - Support the day-to-day programme and budget management and activities of the team; - Assists in preparing summaries of the Senior Management Team meetings; - Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources; - Prepares meetings with different internal stakeholders, as required; - Undertakes a range of tasks related to head office support for the 5 Subregional Offices which are overseen by the Deputy Executive Secretary; - Other ad-hoc related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); Skills Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Studio, Drupal, HTML and CSS is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
