Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI' s goals are:
- to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.
This internship position is within the UNICRI New York Liaison Office. The New York Liaison Office supports UNICRI’s interactions with Member States vis-à-vis its programmes and projects and its overall engagement with United Nations Headquarters.
Currently, given the pandemic-related situation, UNICRI has active Alternate Working Arrangements in place. This means that UNICRI personnel works in a hybrid modality, both from the premises and in telecommuting. In this context, applicants to this Internship position may be requested to undertake the internship also remotely in telecommuting. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking.
The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, starting in October/November 2022, with an opportunity of for extension up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the UNICRI’s New York Liaison Officer.
Responsibilities The intern will assist in managing the implementation of the programme of work of the New York Office. Examples of duties to be performed may include the following:
- Support in the preparation of a report on the key takeaways from the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly as it pertains to the mandate of UNICRI. - Conduct research and provide analysis on relevant issues being focused on by the New York Office, including but not limited to the nexus between organized crime and terrorism, the impact of climate insecurity and violent extremism, and cybercrime and cyber-enabled terrorism. - Attend and prepare summaries of meetings organized at United Nations Headquarters, including but not limited the First and Third Committees of the United Nations General Assembly, the Ad Hoc Committee for Countering the Use of ICT for Criminal Purposes and meetings of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact, as well as related side-events and meetings. - Assist in drafting and preparing other official documents, such as official letters - Perform other duties as assigned.

Education- Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). - Have studied in a field relevant to international law, the laws of international organizations, diplomacy, international affairs or politics. - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
