Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO) located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). UNEP´s Sub-Regional Office for the Southern Cone of Latin America, located in Montevideo, Uruguay, provides support to and coordinates efforts with the Governments of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Within its programmatic growth, the Subregional Office has increased its commitment to governments and other interested parties, to deepen its analysis of the environmental challenges and opportunities that the sub-region is currently facing. In this context, the focus is on the implementation of UNEP´s Medium-Term Strategy (2022-2025) that addresses the triple planetary crisis of climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution. The Sub-Regional Office is well positioned to inform UNEP's corporate policies and plans, through the experiences and lessons learned from working in the 4 countries of the Southern Cone. During 2023 the office in Montevideo supported around five national projects, seven regional projects and held more than 7 events in the country. To achieve its purposes and respond to the growing demands of governments and other key stakeholders, the Sub-regional office requires an Intern to support Uruguay´s UNEP portfolio. Interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Office. The intern will be oriented to support the projects and initiatives portfolio of UNEP in Uruguay, in particular: • Support the programmatic approach of UNEP, aligned with the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS 2022-2025), in projects and initiatives in the country. • Participate in the Workgroups in which UNEP is part. • Monitor the schedules defined of the projects and initiative in which UNEP collaborates. • Cooperate to carry out analysis and research, reports, briefings, and presentations, including the design of virtual or face-to-face dialogues, events, and seminars. • Collaborate with the communication strategy of the Subregional office in matters related to UNEP campaigns and initiatives in the country. • Provide support in the elaboration of communications, letters, workplans, information material, meetings overview, mission reports and technical notes. • Support project development and implementation by gathering relevant information and data. • Support other activities of the Subregional Office with focus in Uruguay as requested.
