Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization with 18,000 staff working in approximately 170 offices globally. UNDP works in development and crisis settings with the aim to achieve the eradication of poverty, reduction of inequalities and exclusion, and sustained development results. UNDP has worked in India since 1951 in almost all areas of human development, from systems and institutional strengthening to inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods, as well as sustainable energy, environment, and resilience. The Chemicals and Environment Management Unit of UNDP is currently working on Hydrochlorofluorocarbons Phaseout Management Plan, Institutional Strengthening Project, Inventorisation of Mercury in India, and developing proposals for Country Level Control of Mercury in air emissions, Environmentally Sound Management of Electrical and Electronic Waste (E-waste), financial models for environmental projects, sustainability projects etc. Under the Hydrochlorofluorocarbons Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) Stage–I, India prioritized phaseout of HCFC-141b in foaming sectors. The Executive Committee (Ex-Com) of the Multilateral Fund (MLF) in its 77th meeting, approved the HPMP Stage-II for India with a total funding of USD 44,911,459 plus implementing agencies support costs. The agreement between the Ex-Com of the MLF and the Government of India to reduce consumption of HCFCs under HPMP Stage II was also approved in the same decision. As per the decision, UNDP assumed the role of lead implementing agency of HPMP Stage-II, with UN Environment and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Proklima, Government of Germany as cooperating agencies. Under HPMP – II, UNDP supports the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, which in turn facilitates participating enterprises to effectively phase-out HCFCs. Two interns will be associated in this assignment; one shall be working for ICAP and other shall be working for Kigali amendment related research and preparation activities. India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) is launched by Ozone Cell of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) which aims:

  • To provide sustainable cooling while keeping in mind, at the same time, the need to protect the ozone layer
  • To provide a 20-year perspective, with projections for cooling needs in 2037-38.

ICAP Objectives:

  • Assessment of cooling requirements across sectors in the next 20 years and the associated refrigerant demand and energy use,
  • Map the technologies available to cater to the cooling requirement including passive interventions,refrigerant-based technologies and alternative technologies such as not-in-kind technologies,
  • Suggest interventions in each sector to provide for sustainable cooling and thermal comfort for all,
  • Focus on skilling of Refrigeration and air-conditioning(RAC) service technicians, and
  • Develop an R&D innovation ecosystem for indigenous development of alternative technologies.

The Kigali Amendment aims for the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by cutting their production and consumption. The goal is to achieve over 85% reduction in HFC consumption by 2047. The impact of the amendment will avoid up to 0.5 °C increase in global temperature by the end of the century.

Duties and Responsibilities

Prime responsibilities of the intern including reporting lines. Under the overall supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will perform the following duties: Intern 1:

  • Support the compilation and analysis of theme-based database of the Action Plan
  • Assist in the preparation of briefing notes on ICAP
  • Assist with research, writing and sharing of compiled data
  • Support in drafting the synthesis of ICAP to feed into the preparation of research articles/papers
  • Support in conduct of the meetings in Ministry and other partners
  • Support in organization of webinars/events to disseminate findings
  • Handholding support in conducting research, compiling data, sourcing, interpreting information and writing reports
  • Contribute to designing and dissemination of knowledge products

Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor(s).

Intern 2:

  • Support the compilation and analysis of theme-based database of the Kigali Amendment
  • Assist in the preparation of briefing notes on Kigali Amendment
  • Assist with research, writing and sharing of compiled data
  • Support in drafting the synthesis of Kigali Amendment to feed into the preparation of research articles/papers
  • Support in conduct of the meetings in Ministry and other partners
  • Support in organization of webinars/events to disseminate findings
  • Handholding support in conducting research, compiling data, sourcing, interpreting information and writing reports
  • Contribute to designing and dissemination of knowledge products

Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor(s).

Competencies

Skills

  • Experience in data collection, sourcing, analysis and interpretation of information
  • Experience conducting research, writing, and editing reports
  • Good command in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Competencies

  • Excellent writing skills as well as strong analytical aptitude.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong analytical, organizational and research skills;
  • Strong PowerPoint and Excel skills is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the UN system is an asset;
  • Basic knowledge of statistics is an asset.

Language Requirements: Fluency in English and Hindi

Required Skills and Experience

Engineering background (Mechanical/Chemical/Environmental) with good communication skills, including sourcing, analysis and interpretation of information and report writing. Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); (c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation; (d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program
