Org. Setting and Reporting

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). Of the six principal organs of the United Nations, it is the only one not located in New York (United States of America). The Court's role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The Court is composed of 15 judges, who are elected for terms of office of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. It is assisted by a Registry, its administrative organ. Its official languages are English and French.

This Internship is located in the Staff Welfare Unit, the Office of the Deputy-Registrar. The intern works under the supervision and guidance of the Staff Welfare Officer.

Responsibilities

Under the overall and direct supervision of the Registry’s Staff Welfare Officer, the intern will perform the following duties:

  • assist in research on studies and best practices in the area of well-being and psychosocial/mental health issues and trends;
  • assist the Staff Welfare Officer in the design and elaboration of well-being and mental health programmes and training;
  • provide assistance during training activities on well-being and mental health;
  • attend and report back on meetings and working groups on well-being and psychosocial/mental health issues;
  • learn about well-being and psychosocial/mental health programmes at the United Nations;
  • learn about and assist with other programmes run by the Staff Welfare Officer;
  • perform other tasks as required.

Education

The internship candidate must:

  • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) or have graduated with the past two years.
  • be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter;
  • have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, and a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.

Languages

A good command of either English or French and a sound working knowledge of the other language is required. Knowledge of Dutch is desirable; knowledge of other official languages of the United Nations would be an asset.

Special Notice

This internship opportunity is available for three months. This period can be extended up to a total period of six months.

The normal hours of work shall be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with a luncheon interval of one hour and a half. However, when necessary, flexible working hours’ arrangements can be established in accordance with the relevant Office Circular.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the Court. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions, though the Registry shall assist with arrangements for the visa application, where necessary.

The United Nations or the Court accept no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. However, interns may enroll in the Court’s Health Insurance scheme provided they pay the applicable premium. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance (including coverage for costs of hospitalization) and third-party liability insurance in the host State for at least the duration of the internship and until their departure. They shall also provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship.
