Org. Setting and Reporting The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Subregional Office for North and Central Asia (SONCA), located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, offers an internship opportunity for a minimum of four months with possible extension up to six months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours).

SONCA covers nine ESCAP member States in North and Central Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan participates in the activities of SONCA as a member of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

Responsibilities Under the general guidance of the Head of Office and the direct supervision by a professional staff member, the intern will:

•Assist with expert group meetings, workshops, intergovernmental meetings and conferences co-organized by SONCA that have some focus on social issues, including the North and Central Asia Multi-stakeholder Forum on Implementing the SDGs;

•Assist with implementing other UN strategies and campaigns with a social development focus, such as Generation Equality, UN Disability Inclusion Strategy etc. Help initiate and develop content for social media channels to promote SONCA activities in the region

•Assist with systematically gender-mainstreaming all aspects of SONCA work in line with ESCAP’s policies and guidelines, the UN SWAP 2.0, and requirements of the UNCT Kazakhstan Gender Theme Group;

•In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other respective global and regional development agendas, assist in undertaking research and analysis to realize inclusive and equitable societies, focusing on one or more of the following issues: (i) gender equality and women’s economic empowerment; (ii) gender aspects of financial inclusion of small and medium enterprises; (iii) inclusive education issues, including pre-school education; (iv) disability inclusion; (v) reducing multi-dimensional poverty, vulnerability and marginalization;

•Perform other duties upon request.

Competencies The United Nations Core Competencies include:

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Applicants shall:

a) have studied areas such as sociology, social science, humanities, international economics, international affairs, development studies, gender studies, regional studies that focused on countries of North and Central Asia, or related areas;

b) be computer literate in standard software applications;

c) have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

d) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Russian or other language spoken in North and Central Asia is an asset.
