Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Logistics, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world.

This Internship is located in the Security Sector Reform Standing Capacity (SSRSC), based in the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy.

Upon authorization of the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, the SSRSC supports field missions on short notice to: (i) start-up of security sector reform components in new United Nations field operations (including participating in pre-mission planning); (ii) reinforce existing United Nations field operations in providing assistance and support to national authorities in the area of security sector reform and governance, and (iii) undertake operation assessments and mapping of the national security systems, as well as evaluations of activities and programmes conducted by the security sector reform components of peace operations.

The internship is for a minimum of six (6) months and Interns work under the supervision of the Chief SSRSC.

The internship will be home-based, however it may include a period in the SSRSC in the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Chief SSRSC, the incumbent will be assigned a work plan with focus on providing support to SSRSC colleagues with a special focus on SSR-related issues for field support, lessons learning development, and security sector reform and governance in Africa.

Within the delegated authority, the interns will also be responsible for the following duties:

- Assist in the team's planning and preparatory efforts for field support; - Assist in the collection, development and management of best practices, lessons learned and other relevant documents with regards to SSR support in the field and to this end gather, research, analyseand present SSR-related information from various sources; - Assist in the drafting of various documents, e.g., minutes of meetings, briefing notes, policy documents, analytical notes etc.; - Perform other duties as required.

Education Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, - Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

For this Internship Programme, focusing on Africa (Central, East and North) knowledge of the political and security situation of the region is desirable.

The Intern is expected to: - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. - Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; - Be proficient in standard office automation (equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. For the internship post focused on Africa, fluency in French is desirable.
