Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Director for the Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS) in the Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA) and Department of Peace Operations (DPO). This incumbent will report to the Team Leader for the implementation of the Strategy for the Digital Transformation of UN Peacekeeping. ODCSS enables, directs and coordinate departmental efforts to ensure the effective integration and management of both Departments.

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates. The Department works to integrate the efforts of UN, governmental and nongovernmental entities in the context of peacekeeping operations. DPO also provides guidance and support on military, police, mine action and other relevant issues to other UN political and peacebuilding missions.

The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department’s mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions.

Responsibilities The internship is UNPAID and full-time for an initial period of four months and may be extended up to six months. Due to COVID-19, this internship may take place remotely. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Team Leader for the implementation of the Strategy for the Digital Transformation of UN Peacekeeping. The internship will be offered in two broad areas:

Political Affairs  Assist in conducting research on issues related to the Strategy for the Digital Transformation of UN Peacekeeping, areas of focus include: innovation, technology for the safety and security of peacekeeping,  Assist in policy analysis based on extracted statistics and data;  Assist in the review of various policies, papers and other documents/materials;  Assist in preparing reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, and articles;  Attend and take notes at conferences and meetings;  Assist in servicing conferences and meetings;  Assist in information and database management;

Data Analytics and Communication Design  Develop corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of-the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels;  Develop data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis;  Build interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analysis applications;  Develop communication designs, including briefings, presentations, fact sheets, snapshots and other visualizations;  Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner.

Education Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university of higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Interns are expected to have additional educational backgrounds in the following areas:

Area 1: Political Affairs Focus of studies in international affairs, international security, political science or a related field is desirable; be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Area 2: Data Analytics and Communication Design Focus of studies in economics, statistics, communications, data visualizations or related field is desirable; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
