Org. Setting and Reporting United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI' s goals are: to advance understanding of crime-related problems; to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located in the UNICRI Liaison Rome Office. UNICRI Rome liaises with the Host Country, the diplomatic corps, the academic and business sectors and the Rome-based UN agencies as well as the civil society. In close cooperation with relevant counterparts, UNICRI Rome supports the communication for new projects; follows up on the ongoing projects financed by the Italian Foreign Ministry; facilitates meetings with Government officials for Heads of Units based in UNICRI Headquarters in Turin; and represents UNICRI in events in Rome. UNICRI Liaison Office in Rome produces and maintains website www.onuitalia.it (in Italian) with the latest news from UNICRI including its events, as well as news from the United Nations system. The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, with an opportunity of an extension up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the first two months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship and must be able to telework and have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and measures be removed, internship can be continued from UNICRI's premises.

Responsibilities Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to: −Translate press releases/articles/news from English to Italian. −Assist in updating the Italian website www.onuitalia.it. −Assist in data collection. −Conduct research and provide analysis on relevant issues. −Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations etc. −Monitor regional and global news sources for articles and stories relevant to the project, programme or unit activities. −Assist in maintaining databases. −Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

−Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of, a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Preferable fields of study: foreign languages, literature, translation, journalism or other related fields.

In addition, interested candidates must: - Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point); - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and, - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Will you be able to work telecommuting and do you have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assigned tasks in telecommuting?

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in both spoken and written English and Italian is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of CMU. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

UNICRI interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in UNICRI duty stations before they depart to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, UNICRI will provide supporting documents in this regard.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
