  • Knowledge of design software such as Canva and Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite is an advantage
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environment sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The New York Office represents UNEP at the UN Headquarters, fostering strategic partnerships, information exchange, and cooperation between Member States, the UN Secretariat, UN entities and major groups, and UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi on processes relevant to UNEP’s mandate. It also works to ensure that the environmental dimension is integrated into global discussions at UN Headquarters while linking key environmental outcomes with intergovernmental and interagency processes. The internship position is located in the UNEP/New York Office. Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Regional Information Officer, the intern will undertake a range of assignments to engage with regional audiences to raise environmental awareness and promote change in policy and practice. This will include the following duties: • Generate content ideas and social media strategies to promote existing and new UNEP digital platforms; • Contribute to the implementation of global campaign activities and advocacy initiatives; • Assist in the planning and coordination of meetings and key events such as UN International Days, side events during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA); • Assist in producing compelling graphics and multimedia content including but not limited to infographics, flyers, posters, banners and videos; • Assist with outreach to media including press briefings and conferences; • Monitor and update the external web site and internal intranet presence; • Assist in the timely delivery of flagship information products to key stakeholders and the media; • Research and prepare clear and compelling reports, stories, presentations and other communications materials in support of organizational priorities; • Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and youth; • Attend and report back on relevant meetings, conferences, and other events, as requested; • Update and maintain contact database for stakeholders and partners, including media; • Perform any other communications-related duties, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); preferably enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) with a focus on environmental sciences, natural resource management, communication or international relations c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Indicate any IT skills and applications that you are proficient in, e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva etc. In cover letter, please explain why you are the best candidate for the internship, what you hope to gain from the internship. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
