You have:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
  • Proficiency in organizing events, logistics of event planning, coordinating activities between different stakeholders
  • Proficiency in communications and advocacy on social media
  • Fluency in oral and written English
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable

Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The UN-Habitat New York Office reports to the Office of the Executive Director at the UN-Habitat Headquarter in Nairobi. The New York Office is responsible for supporting the executive, programme and partnership functions of the organization. Interns will work under the overall supervision of the Director, New York Office, and report directly to the professionals on substantive matters and to the Administrative Assistant on general administrative matters. Interns will enhance the capacity of UN-Habitat New York Office to provide substantive support to the UN General Assembly, to the UN inter-governmental bodies and assist in the planning and organizing UN-Habitat’s inter-agency collaboration across UN entities and UN reform activities. Interns will also support the undertaking of programmatic and administrative tasks as relevant. Responsibilities • The intern will have the opportunity of learning and working in a very dynamic environment. • The intern will be able to contribute to in-person/virtual activities, including Webinars and online meetings. • update daily UN-Habitat social media platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc). • Performing analytical research and media/advocacy campaigns, for specific projects or for posting on twitter and Facebook. • Provide media support to events organized by UN-Habitat and assist in taking photos and videos for media coverage and archiving. • Provide assistance on administrative tasks (e.g., formatting spreadsheets, proofreading text documents, searching archives, running basic reports, etc.) • Distribute relevant articles to key UN staff. • Assist in creating graphic-design related materials. • Assist in UN-Habitat advocacy and outreach activities to internal and external audiences. • Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of public information materials, including website content. • Administrative duties, such as organization of events, website management and stocking and mailing public information materials. • Perform other duties as necessary.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: MBA, 4th Year Undergraduate, graduate students and other further studies on Communications, journalism, international relations, social science, urban planning and design, Architectural studies and among other similar areas. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
