Overview

Assist in programme research projects related to the Multilateral Fund policies.

You have:

• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent);
• Have graduated with a university degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Political Science, Public Policy, International Relations, Data Science, or a related field.
• Demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills;
• Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
• Demonstrate an ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
• Conduct literature reviews, collecting, organizing and analyzing qualitative or quantitative data, policy analysis, comparative assessments, and preparation of research reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) supports projects to reverse the deterioration of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer and reducing consumption of high global warming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). It was established in 1991 as the financial mechanism of the Montreal Protocol to assist developing countries (Article 5 countries in the language of the Protocol) in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. The Multilateral Fund is managed by an Executive Committee (ExCom) with an equal representation of seven industrialized and seven Article 5 countries that are elected annually by the Meeting of the Parties. The Committee reports every year to the Meeting of the Parties on its operations, and it is assisted by the Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada and administered by UNEP (www.multilateralfund.org). This internship is located in UNEP/MLF at the Montreal duty station. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are required to: • Demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills; • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; • Demonstrate an ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The Multilateral Fund is offering an internship with a start date of 4 Jan 2027 for a minimum duration of 3 months and maximum duration up to 6 months. Under the direct supervision of a Senior Programme Management Officer, the intern will provide assistance to the Multilateral Fund Secretariat with the following duties and responsibilities: 1. Assist in designing a tool for populating and regularly updating information on servicing sectors and non-investment related components from KIPs/HPMPs projects regarding. 2. Compile, analyse, information from KIPs/HPMPs projects regarding: • Refrigeration servicing sector activities including types of training, types and levels of certification programs, local training institutes, servicing sector categories, specific regulations and policies of the servicing sector, roles of local associations, and other parameters as identified during the research exercise. • Demonstration components included in HPMPs/KIPs including information on sectors, category of applications, sizes, alternatives, energy efficiency gains (as applicable), reported results, post project impacts, etc. • Regulatory frameworks on controlled substances, equipment, and servicing practices including licensing/quota systems, bans, prohibition of venting, record keeping, registry of equipment, licensing of servicing workshops and individuals, leak monitoring, and other elements as identified during the research exercise. • Policies related to placing into market and control of RACHP equipment with focus on allowed refrigerants and energy efficiency related policies including, but not limited to, MEPS and building codes. 3. Other related work as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: - Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); - Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent); or - Have graduated with a university degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Political Science, Public Policy, International Relations, Data Science, or a related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. A background in research, data compilation, policy analysis, comparative assessments, and preparation of research reports is desirable. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
