Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Established in 1997, UNMAS works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms. As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. The intern works in the Strategic Planning Unit of UNMAS HQ within the Office of the Director and reports to the UNMAS Review Committee Secretary. The internship is for six months and the intern work five days a week.
Responsibilities The intern will gain experience in and support strategic planning and management processes in UNMAS through providing support to the programme review committee. The review committee is a multi-disciplinary committee that reviews and approves all projects, proposals and workplans for UNMAS field programmes in both peace operations as well as in non-mission settings across 20 countries. Supporting the review committee will provide excellent exposure to the work of UNMAS and mine action more broadly as well as to the work of the United Nations in Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions.
Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Assisting the Review Committee secretary in preparing review schedules, planning meetings and managing the Review committee tool; - Supporting the preparation of documentation to be reviewed by the committee; - Attending review committee meetings and ensuring the reviews are completed and endorsed within the allotted timeframes; - Providing advice and support to field managers on the Committee process; - Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents related to the review process; - Support other ad hoc activities as required.

Education To qualify for the United Nations Headquarters Secretariat Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) both at the time of application and during the internship; or 2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Undergraduates (for instance, students pursuing a Bachelor's degree) are not eligible to apply.
Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice The internship is UNPAID; full-time internship (35 hours per week) or part-time internship (20 working per week). The internship can be undertaken remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement from the UN Premise at the New York City, USA, duty station.
